Trust me... 100 years from now, no one will remember that he was a 30 game winner.

Talk about a billion dollar airport with a hundred dollar control tower. A brilliant talent, with less sense than God gave a gopher, and no more ethical judgement than a crack ho.

Here is a quote from my book, Mendoza's Heroes ( www.mendozasheroes.com ): Sadly, he [Ray Oyler] was only 42 years old when he passed away in 1981 of a heart attack. Hard luck befell other members of the 1968 Tigers. Pitchers Don McMahon and Joe Sparma also died of heart attacks. Norm Cash drowned in 1986 after falling out of a fishing boat. And perhaps the most dismal story of them all: Denny McLain, who had a ticket to Cooperstown at age 24, squandered it through gambling, drugs, and embezzlement. Today, he spends his days behind bars in a Michigan prison [though he has since been released]. For Eschew, McLain is still the last 30-game winner in the Majors (31-6) and Lolich (3-0) was the hero of the 1968 World Series (McLain went 1-2).

Denny was the ultimate bad boy in the ultimate bad boy city, Detroit. He once rigged a bucket of ice water over the locker room door, knowing that three sportswriters (who had written disparaging things about him recently-all factual) were about to be allowed in. Of course, his plan worked to perfection, all three were drenched in the freezing water. Is he still the last 30 game winner in baseball? Mickey Lolich was the hero of the Series. 1968? I think so.
