Tatum was an unrepentent assassin on the field, a cornerback who hit opponents so hard that he knocked them unconscious at times. I put him here because of the reaction that occurred to his hit on Darryl Stingley. As a result of that play Stingley was paralyzed, and there was a wide outcry that Tatum should be banned from football. Well, nonsense. It was a clean, if hard play and not even Stingley accused Tatum of a cheap shot. It was no different than a dozen plays you can see every Sunday during the season, and it was ill fortune that the result was so tragic. Much was made of the fact that Tatum did not apologize publicly to Stingley, and perhaps that says something about Tatum's compassion, but he did nothing to bring disgrace to his sport.
