Some years back baseball analyst Bill James put a list of the then current managers together. He rated them in various ways and concluded with some quirky stuff, including the question: If there was no professional baseball, what would this manager be doing today. For Martin, the answer was Twenty to life. I can't improve on that.

He's not nearly as bad as the steroid junkies, Steinbrenner, and Ty Cobb.

An unspectacular but solid player. As a manager, he was a turnaround expert, every place he went, they won. When the Yankees started winning consistently, he became his own worst enemy, unable to coexist with reknowned success. Some of the things he said, while employed in the game (about George Steinbrenner , Reggie Jackson) dishonored the game. Getting in Reggie Jackson's face, in the dugout, no, that's baseball.
