Let's get a couple of things clear. Sosa wasn't the first player to take a doctored bat on the field and probably won't be the last. Brett, Hernandez, Luzinski, and Robinson were all caught with corked bats (and no, I'm not confusing the Brett pine-tar incident here) and all were ejected from the game involved. Secondly, a corked bat does not make a player a better hitter. What it does is lighten the bat and increase bat speed, thereby generating more power. For players of major league calibre, this makes a difference, but it would not turn a high-school player into a superstar. The player still has to get the sweet part of the bat on major league pitching, which, corked bat or no, is damned hard to hit. Finally, in doctoring a bat, Sosa is following a long and largely smiled at tradition in baseball that includes pitchers scuffing, cutting or otherwise doctoring balls, batters erasing the back line of the batters box, home team groundskeepers doctoring the home plate area, etc etc. The logic goes It ain't cheating if you don't get caught, and has always been part of baseball. This does not extend to performance enhancing drugs, nor should it. If, and I say if, he did that, I need to add a star or two.

Between the cork and the 'roids, he and Bonds both are anti-heros in baseball. I cheer every time they are called out.

i didnt like him but once they found the cork in his bat I disliked him even more.

I fail to see why this is so awful. I agree with Irishgit. There has been much worse things done in baseball. I don't think this is reason to ban a player from baseball. I also don't think this is worse is worse than what Rose or Jackson.

This SOB needs to be banned from baseball. What Mr. Sosa did was worse than what Rose or Jackson ever did. To make it worse, Sosa is a steroid-user.
