Doctoring the baseball is a tradition that dates back more than a century. Some of the biggest names in the sport have done it, admitted it, and often been damn proud of it. So Perry, in loading up with vaseline, Crisco, muscle rub, saliva or whatever, was just following a long and hallowed tradition. Watching him pitch and go through the rigamarole of touching parts of his uniform was always some fun.
