The ideology of the National Socialist German Worker's Party. It does not belong to any other National Socialist Party, but to the particular case in the history. Ideology was accepeted as an official for totalitarian government, and can be characterized by racism, national geopolitical ambitions and military expansion, and state control of the economy.

Why am I not surprised to find Nazism at the bottom of the ratings list? Nonwithstanding the fact that Hitler was not particularly liked by all the people he murdered, oppressed, annexed, invaded, suppressed, terrorized, and violated the neutrality of, Nazism has nevertheless gained an unexpected foothold in the modern world. I think that the majority of people who advocate Nazism are fairly clueless to it's actual workings as a political system and only see the favorable (in their mind) results of the genocide that is so closely linked to it. I think that it was Adolf Hitler's skill at manipulating political and socio-economic situations that allowed the Third Recih to last as long as it did. The man annexed Austria; invaded Czechoslovakia and made the world think the Czechs were the agressors; and pulled the same stunt with Poland before the world even caught on that Germany was an agressor nation. That takes some political skill. However, I think that the system of National Socialism, as it was known in Germany, would have never been successful without a charismatic leader. I'll conclude with a quote from the Governer General of Poland, Hans Frank, before being hanged at Nuremberg: "A thousand years will pass and the guilt of Germany will not be erased." Replace the word "Germany" with the word "Nazism" and you'll have a pretty accurate picture of current world opinion.

It was the incrementalism that did it to them, Sierra...them being the German people. At first few minded feeling "a little more secure," and then, little by little, once the government had a grip on nearly every aspect of German society and government, it squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezed hard. In no small way, the loss of personal privacy as a trade-off for some infinitessimally small gain, or perception of gain, in "safety." So, while Naziism is evil (to you), it was perpetuated incrementally, imperceptibly, under false pretenses. What is happening to personal rights and privacy in the USA underscores just how pernicious fear can be. We very well may be next...and I already hear the "it won't/can't happen here." Germans now look back in dismay asking themselves--arguably the most sophisticated and advanced country in Europe at the time--how on earth did we let it happen?

UPDATE: I'm not put off by the name, Naziism, but am more put off in that it was a trojan horse for what it really was--fascism.

Nazi Fascism is discussed in much greater detail Here and Here. The most applicable definition of the American version of Nazi Fascism, both pre- AND post-WWII, is simply "anti-liberalism". The second definition down on this Google Definition Search says this:

"The name comes from the Latin fasces – a bundle of rods with a projecting axe, which was the symbol of authority in ancient Rome. The term was applied by Mussolini to his movement after his rise to power in 1922. The Fascists were viciously anti-Communist and anti- liberal and, once in power, relied on an authoritarian state apparatus. They also used emotive slogans and old prejudices (for example, against the Jews) to bolster the leader's strongman appeal. ..."
www.channel4.com/history/microsites/H/history/browse/glossary.html

Many on the right try to confuse the issue by trying to revise fascism into a leftist movement, which is clearly ridiculous. Those who try to say that Mussolini and Hitler were of different political ideologies would do well to just look at the stamp pictured above this post. Remember, the Jews in pre-Hitler Germany were largely liberal and secular THERE too.

The fact that there are still people supporting National-Socialism means you only seen the dark side of this political ideology. I bet you didn't even try to see many aspects of this ideology that are quite interesting, like culture preservation, inmigration control and many things that make National-Socialism a great ideology. Only thing I dont like of Nazism is the idea of exterminating people instead of deporting them out of the country (they did this at fist but concentration camps maintenance required too much money which they needed for tanks, weapons, etc...). Think that if there is still people supporting this (and there is much more than you think believe me) is because some raced or religions like Islamism have become a threat for the world and must be erradicated. Or do you want a 2nd 11th September?.

Evidently, the egregious ideologies throughout history are born from a country of uncertainty, poverty, power struggle or a hostile political climate. An example of a autocratic leader (Hitler) instilling jingoism into an unsteady Germany. The inhumane doctrine of applied eugenics, socialism, minority annihilation and xenophobia ingrained this horrid ideology into history's reality. It makes me nauseous to believe there are Neo-Nazi's purporting this insanity into the world still. It reveals what human discontent is capable of.

Nazism was the offspring of all the ideologies of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries: socialism, nationalism, utilitarianism, fascism, Darwinism, etc. It shows why sometimes it is important to cling to old traditions and ideas, and not be so open to change. Many new philosophical concepts had been formed, and the onslaught of all these ideas were encompassed in one place at one time. Boom! It was too much. Germans were swept up in a sea of ideology, and they drowned in it.

Nazism or National Socialism shows you that extremism, left or right, is two sides of the same coin. Having visited Auschwitz recently, humanity needs to look at a completely different course for its future. Hitler's ideals were his own personal ones (through disappointments and screwed up upbringing)and convincing people that they were right ideals only needed a few manipulators in power to see that bloodshed was unleashed. Sound familiar? History repeats itself till we break the pattern.

The showcase of state nihilism in practice. Nazism whereby state power as an ends in and of itself justified any measure of the state for its own survival was the nadir of human depravity. It shows how clueless people really are to make statements that nazism was really capitalism. WHAT? How assinine! Ask the Jews that escaped the concentration camps what they think of such stupidity! Capitalism is predicated upon existing moral norms and traditions- most notably individual liberty and a right to the ownership of one's ideas and labor. State nihilism is actually the antitheis of such a system- a system whereby the state is intrinsically an organic being wielding power capriciously to serve its own ends at the expense of the individual's rights to anything- including life!

(4/25/2004) Just another Left-Wing, Atheist philosophy responsible for the death of millions. UPDATE: First, I was about to write a response to Ansgard's claims that Nazism isn't left-wing, but Solenoid wrote a response along the lines of what I was going to say, so I won't be redundant. Second, he wrote, Thanks to Hitler we got 20 million nasty jews less. I deduce two things from that statement: 1) He hates Israel and probably thinks Sharon's a fascist, and 2) Looking at his sentence structure, he can't possess much more than a 7th grade education.

A textbook case, fortunately rare, of what happens when one man's mental illness infects an entire country. Because of the terrible economic situation in central Europe in the early 1920s the disease spread quickly, like a medieval plague. While I hope nothing like this ever happens again, history is notoriously hard to predict.

Liberals like to equate Nazism with the right wing. But in fact, the Nazi party was a brand of socialism. The word Nazi is a shortened form of the actual name, National Socialist German Workers' Party. Nazism has much more in common with Communism than with the Free Enterprise system. Both the Nazis and Communists had the oppressed majority being ruled by the privileged few. Both groups severely persecuted Jews and Christians. On the other hand, conservatives want to stress personal liberty, and avoid an over-reaching and intrusive government. Nazism tightly restricted personal freedom.

My rating says it, Nazism is terrible. Thank goodness there was only ever one country (Nazi Germany) that practiced it. Nazism is based around racist socialism, which is morally wrong and which is dire for anyone 'coloured'. The promotion of national expansion is a bit of a worry because it means that the ideology essentially condones the unlawful invasion of other territories, perhaps bringing war in it's wake. It also brings a little Communism into the mix because all economics are controlled by the government, stopping people from getting rich through business. This is not a good thing because it blocks out foreign investment, which can prove key to a good economy. Nazism is a mix of communism and facism, two failed ideologies which have led to tragic persecution.

All I know is about WWII. I can't claim to know the actual ideology behind it, unless it was about totalitarian dictatorship, genocide and nationalism, all three things that I strongly oppose of. As for it being effective--so what? What the hell does that mean? They effectively brainwashed people with propaganda (he he, ring a bell?) and almost wiped out the Jewish race? So everyone followed Hitler, because he was charismatic. So is any cult leader.

I'm not at all suprised to see this at the bottom of the list because most Americans (that is to say most people on this site) don't know the first thing about Nazisms. Yes certainly it was created by an evil bastard, but as far as a system of governing goes this is actually quite effective. No, not quite effective - very effective. At the end of the First World War Germany had much of its territory stripped from it, its army was to be kept under a hundred thousand troops (even today Germany's army is around three hundred and fifty thousand strong) and it was left with a weak and ineffectual government (even more so than the monarchial government of the Kaisers). The situation was so bad that on many occasions the Communists (*shudder*) gained the support of frighteningly large proportions of the populace. Hitler joined a small workers party in Munich and gradually warped it from a pseudo-communist, ultra-left party to a fascist, ultra right party which came to control Germany and bring an end to the Weimar Republic and gave birth to the mighty Third Reich. This government went on to kill six and a half million people in a brutal act of genocide and start a war in which some fifty million plus people died (although some of these were in the Pacific Theatre and as such not directly related to the Reich - but the Pacifc Theatre was a sideshow compared to Europe). However - it did attempt to destroy Bolshevism and deserves some credit for that - although in its failed attempt to do so it killed twenty-seven million Russians. It also made Germany the mightiest nation on the planet even if just for a few years (Hitler was a better politician than he was a general). This system however is only good because of its Fascist tennants - the exclusively Nazist parts generally revolve around genocide. Anti-Semitism however is not something exclusive in Germany to the Nazis - some of Germany's most famous individuals were anti-Semites (Luther, founder of German Protestantism and Wagner, the great Germanic composer were both fiercly anti-Semitic). So although this system encouraged some terrible things it was effective and is at least superior to Communism (which killed more and was far, far, far less effective). This ideology should at least be higher than Totalitarianism which is bad by its very nature and Communism which is lunacy - not to mention perhaps monarchism which has nothing at all going for it. I not suprised that everyone here allows themselves to be brainwashed - its unfortunate in the West how people are so ignorant of history and believe whatever they are told.

For one thing socialism and racism simply don't mix. One is a complete advocate of equality and the other is one that commends individuals as being superior or inferior based on thier racial stock (which has no bearing on thier ability or morals). Another thing, something which no-one seems to have mentioned is that Hitler despised all Communists and Social democrats (and many others) and loved putting them in concentration camps for thier equality based, internationalist ideals which were immensely contrary to his own. The only meagre aspects of socialism in his government was his deficit spending on public works projects (Keynesianism basically, I'm sad to say) which completely turned around the depression era economy. In only a few short years and Germany was made into an industrial powerhouse. Hitlers main failings were his anti-socialist policies (most of them) like having cosy relationships with corporations and allowing them to use slave labour, his racism, his expansionism, nationalism and just generally being a genocidal lunatic. It would do well for the world to learn the lessons of history in that nationalism and militarism are a poison as well as bias against equal oppurtunity and tolerance. Sadly too much of these undesirable elements till exist in the world today...

Yes, we are all taught to hate and fear Nazism from an early age, and with good reason. Most well-adjusted individuals have a reflexive aversion to the swastika. What we are not taught are the reasons WHY Nazism should be hated, and WHY it can easily arise again under a different name. Hitler came to power by convincing the Alzheimers-ridden Kaiser that he and his party were the only people who could rescue Germany from its enemies, both internal and external. Especially after the Reichstag (parliament) was burned down in an act of terrorism that was blamed on the communists but which was actually staged by Hermann Goering and his men. Add to that the complete humiliation of Germany under the terms of Versailles, and you have a terrified and vengeful populace that was willing to give up all of their rights and freedoms in the name of security. After Hitler came to power, it was too late for the people to do anything. Anybody could be a government snitch, so nobody trusted each other and they had to keep up the facade of rabid nationalism and militarism in order to avoid being beaten or killed. "We are all in this together, comrades, beset by enemies on all sides but especially from within, those traitors who would give aid and comfort to the enemy" so went the rhetoric spouted by everybody. Not because they felt that the Fuhrer was right, but because they were too terrified not to toe the party line. Nazism and all of its tenets should be taught in schools, so that people can become educated about the dangers of such radical thinking. It is easy to ignore racist neo-nazi skinheads, and dismiss them as lunatics, because they wear the swastika and are openly violent and hateful. Do you really think that the next time fascism arises it'll be wearing a huge swastika on its sleeve for us to recognize it by? We must be watchful of the subtler signs. Remember it took like twelve years for Hitler to fully rise to power; these things don't happen overnight. They happen slowly, but once a seemingly trivial and unnecessary right or freedom is given up, it is almost never regained, and these trivialilies add up until one day you wonder just what the hell happened to your life and your country. Those of you who have read my other comments have a pretty good idea of my political views, so I won't launch into any more polemics now, but I desperately want to warn people to pay attention and heed the signs. It is not God who will one day destroy this world.
