Maybe this is why the Dixie Chicks made the comment about being ashamed of being Texan. This one actually scared me; I know middle schoolers that know more geography than this. They probably know more US history as well.

No seriously, Bush said this to demonstrate his affinity with Middle America. His political base is in the South and the West, those are the states that helped elect him. Sometimes he shoots out these types of statements, including the mangled one above, to shore up the base. It's like the statement he made before when he went to England last year. I had to rent a tuxedo to visit the Queen. He does this to appeal to the folks back in Midland and Odessa. It sounds sort of disingenuous if you ask me. Seems like Bush Jr. is trying to atone for the sins of the father, which includes not knowing what a grocery store scanner does and not knowing how to eat pork rindes.
