 | abichara (63) 03/13/2005 | Yeah sure King Richard! I believe that Richard Nixon did quite a few positive things for the country, especially on the foreign policy front, but the whole Watergate scandal was very highly damaging to the country. Ultimately this scandal taught us that this is a nation based on the rule of law. This quote captures the essence of the Watergate scandal and the 'imperial' Presidency of Richard Nixon. The Watergate scandal was reaching its climax when the infamous tapes recording the President's private conversations were released. When people heard this quote, it really cut deep in the public's conscious and how the President relates to the public. What makes America different is that it's leaders just normal citizens, they aren't sovereign and above the law. They aren't immune to prosecution and have to react to a civil suit just like anyone else. America is a nation built on laws and institutions. No one person, including the executive, can be above it all.
