 | Beelzebub (1) 04/08/2005 | Hi. My name is Dan. And I'm a Massachusetts Democrat. (Chorus: Hi, Dan.) That's what happens at a Democrats Anonymous meeting. Actually, it's funny. In the last few years, the right has successfully managed to frame the issues to make you believe that all Democrats believe that we should live on communes and allow welfare women pop out puppies one after the other while eating bonbons and watching Days of Our Lives on the widescreen television. It's not like that, folks. Most Democrats I know favor helping those who cannot help themselves (my, how Christian of us), but not enabling those who play the system. We don't believe in corporate welfare, tax breaks for the richest Americans, allowing the right wing elites to pretend that they aren't, and alienating ourselves from the rest of the world. We also believe in things like personal responsibility, constitutional freedoms, and the right of every American to stand up and say, Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot.

 | Djahuti (54) 03/24/2005 | Hah! Check the numbers- vastly more money goes to CORPORATE welfare- including taxpayers paying to clean up messes made by irresponsible corporations and bailing them out financially.By the way,the stereotype of people on welfare being a bunch of dope addicts is rarely true. Most of the recipients are single Moms struggling to feed, clothe and educate their kids-but that's right,as long as they don't have abortions who cares about their miserable existance? SO MUCH FOR COMPASSIONATE CONSERVATIVISM!!!

 | EschewObfuscation (61) 03/19/2005 | Jake makes good points. I do not think that democrats say or believe the statement above, though. I think they view the government as the benefactor of last resort. I think they regard poverty and hunger as ubiquitous problems that cannot be solved and the only organization large enough (and with a never-ending supply of money) to bail out poor people. If you read this level of responsibility into the specific wording in the Constitution, then you must be an advocate that every American not only has the right to keep and bear arms, but it is the responsibility of the government to provide guns, and ammunition, to all citizens. Where is it written in the Constitution that the government is responsible for giving money, any money, to the poor?

 | jakemr33 (6) 03/18/2005 | This is one issue that drives me crazy when it comes to Democrats. They believe, Oh all we have to do is give these poor people money and everything will be ok! Have you ever heard the phrase, You are responsible for your own actions. and have you ever heard the expression, Give a man a fish, feed him for a day, teach a man to fish, feed him for life! Dem's, think about that phrase......The reason I am a Republican is for the simple reason that the Republican Party believes individuals are responsible for their own actions, unlike the Democratic Party who believes society is to blame for peoples actions. Does anyone sense a communist or socialist theme here?
