05/27/2008 | Honesty is something I demand in a relationship/friendship. It doesn't have to be complete brutal honesty, you can tell somebody the truth and still show some tact in dealing with the emotions of others. White lies are ok. "Do I look fat in these shorts?" I would rather hear "I like you better in these...." than "Damn, you look like shamu on a binge!" But in matters where honesty counts, where my trust is at stake.....be honest.

Update: Nobody ever gains anything by lying, except for a guilty conscience. Friends don't lie to one another.

10/09/2007 | it would be hard to be friends with someone who lied all of the time. I would hope they would be honest with me. it would be difficult if I always wondered if I could trust them.as I have grown older this seems all the more important.

02/28/2007 | Honesty is better than loyalty. Nobody is right all the time. Sticking up for someone who is wrong doesn't do either of them any good. Telling a friend when they are wrong is never easy but better in the long run.

01/12/2004 | this one can be overrated because sometimes a true friend may protect you from the truth, or at the very least explain something to you in a way that doesn't hurt you. for instance, a friend of mine recently found out her boyfriend was cheating on her, and everyone was telling her stories about him and every time it would break her heart, so although i was privy to information about him, i didn't tell her because i felt that she needed me more as someone whose shoulder she could cry on than someone who told her the truth.

Honesty is very important to me anytime, but you also need to be able to mix it with tactfulness (which seems to be in short supply in this area of the world.) I want to feel that if I ask someone something, that they would give me a direct answer in a respectable manner. Overall, I would have to say honesty ranks number one with me.

07/08/2003 | If you care enough about a friend, you find a kind way to let them know what they should hear instead of letting them be deceived. Honesty shows that you respect and value your friend and leads the way to trust and goodwill. Dishonesty is a major reason why people dislike politicians and used car salesmen. Big lies are guaranteed to eventually catch up to you and undermine your relationships. Honesty pays.

05/04/2003 | My friends say that one of my best qualities as a friend, is the fact that I am honest...sometimes even brutally so. If they ask for my opinion, even if they know that what I say will make them mad, I tell them, and they know that I will tell them my honest opinion. Everyone appreciates an honest person, and people that say they don't, are lying.

04/04/2003 | Honestly is extremely important; it helps to be tactful, but I'd never want someone to lie to me even to spare my feelings. It's better in the long run to know the truth. If you ask your friend for an honest opinion and he/she says something that you didn't want to hear, just remember, it's an opinion, advice, you're not obliged to take it. If I'm doing something that's harmful to myself or others, I'd rather them tell me and hurt my "feelings" if they think my judgement may be off.

12/09/2001 | Really, what are people looking for in a friend? Someone to pick them up, by whatever means necessary, or someone to help them grow as a stronger and better person. Honesty is one of the best qualities a person can have. An honest friend will tell you if they don't like your ugly sweater. But get over it. It is YOUR sweater. And if they insult you on something less trivial than the appearance of your sweater, maybe you should consider their opinion. Of course, I dont' mean an honest person that's critical, just one that will tell the truth when asked.

12/06/2001 | Honesty is a toughonw. It is very important. Question is whether to be totally open and honest or to sometimes shade your tue feelings when you want to spare your friend's feelings. I think it is best to be as straight up as possible, but sometimes that is difficult to do. Are white lies bad? I am not sure if they are in all situations.
