Most Americans probably aren't that aware of Brazilian culture, but close to half the 176 million people in Brazil are of African descent. Most of this group is mixed race. The whites of the country have their roots in Portugal, Germany, Italy, Spain and Poland. By the way, the White House has since denied the Brazilian newspaper columnist's anecdote, which had credited Condoleeza Rice for quickly stepping in to debrief Bush on Brazil's racial makeup. Lending some suspicion that the quote truly happened was the Brazilian President's public acknowledgement was that Bush was in a learning phase regarding South America.
