I'm a total sucker for animals that need a home (precisely why I could never work at the Humane Society - I'd have my own zoo). The most recent addition to our household has been a guinea pig who desperately needed a good home. I will admit that I agreed to this after several cocktails, and when she first arrived at my house I thought, ohh, what have I gotten myself into! But my initial reaction proved false. This little critter is actually quite endearing, easy to take care of, friendly and good with kids. My daughter absolutely LOVES our Guinea Pig. Contrary to what some people have claimed, I have no problems with smell - the trick is to give them regular baths, clean the cage regularly and make sure they have a cage big enough with the right bedding. I recommend building a Cubes and Coroplast cage (google it. They are cheap and easy to build) and using aspen shavings and/or Carefresh. As with any animal, they're not for everyone, but in the right home, they can be a delightful addition.

I absolutely adore guinea pigs! They make such sweet and wonderful pets. They're great with children, as they rarely ever bite and are quite sociable little creatures.

Guinea Pigs kinda creep me out. They're too tiny and their teeth concern me, which is completely irrational really because my cat thinks it's hysterical to bite me when he's playing.

Actually a better pet then most people think. They love to be hand fed and cuddled, as long as they don't feel cramped. Kinda like a guy.

Only adopt one if you have the time, money and knowledge about thier diet to care for them-they are NOT A CHILDRENS TOY!!

They look cute, but can bite and scratch, and need their cages cleaned alot, and as stated above, have short lifespans, which means they don't make very good long time pets.

I'm 50/50 on this one. I owned 2 of them and loved them dearly, but they have their flaws (as pets) too. If you don't have a lot of time to mainatin them, don't get any. Their cages need cleaned constantly, and they're foul (odor) if you don't. You also have to clip their nails, which can be a pain in a** if you've never done it before, or if you're scared you'll hurt them. They're a lot of work, and most people simply don't have the time.

Guinea Pigs are a great first pet! They are not prone to biting, so if you have a kid you nevr have to worry about your guinea pig biting him. They are however a little smelly if the cage is not cleaned regularly and they can be a little skittish. However, I'm sure, if handled for long periods of time that they would begin to become sweet pets. Just don't underestimate the responsibility of a living animal. A 5-10 year old will have a hard tim taking care of a guinea pig alone. Parents need to relize that they will be cleaning the cage...a lot.

If it taste the same as Porky Pig then it's going on my dinner plate. I would never have a pig as a pet. That's for people in the southern part of the nation.

i had a guinea pig named fudge. i liked her and all, but she smelled, even when cleaned... and all she did was eat, squeal like a pig (hence the name) and eat eat eat. she sure was sweet though.but sweet doesnt amount to the mess (the mess ruined the dresser her cage was on) and noise. also, she developed a huge tumor on her side... it was kind of gross.

My friend had guinea pigs once. Every time I went over to her house, I avoided the cage because of the smell. Even when freshly cleaned, those fat, hairy creatures really stunk up their cage. After a while they moved the cage into the garage because the big rodents were always flinging their crap out of the bars and onto the carpet. Just lovely.

I had a guinea pig when i was a kid and they have the cutest personalities i have ever seen. She was so funny when she'd get mad at me she's chomp her teeth our squeak at me. Funny little things. I'd recomend them for children because they're not as small and fragile as a hamster or gerbil and not as nippy.

They're cute and sometimes cuddly but it doesn't take them long to leave a smell and you have to clean their cages out pretty often, especially if they stay in a four foot cage. The long haired ones seem kind of tempermental but they're fun to feed.

I worked in a pet shop for awhile when I was in college and have to say that these little buggers scare me - a group of them even had staring roles in one of my nightmares once. I'm not usually afraid of too many things but they make a sound that is just plain creepy! They also move really erratically and you can tell right away they are not into being picked up - they don't seem too crazy about being touched period. I would pick up one of the tarantulas we sold in that shop before I'd touch a guinea pig.

I own a guinepig myself, her name is Tove and we have been soulmates for around four years now. She's always there for me, she wakes me up in the morning with her sound (they sound a little like pigs really) She is always friendly, and I never have to watch TV alone. She likes just the same shows as I do! Guinepigs are great pets. Just belive me!
