I have to say that I enjoyed the book better than the movie, but the performances were magnificent, particularly those of Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan. While reading the book, I got the impression that Stephen King was against the death penalty and thus portrayed his death row characters (for the most part) as reformed, gentle beings. It amazed me after watching the film how my view of the death penalty had been skewed and manipulated, which is a powerful thing for a movie to do. My favorite scene was when John Coffey is watching Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers on the big screen -- that's a moving, powerful scene that wasn't in the books but added a lot to the film version.

One of Stephen King's best novels. A sad and powerful emotional story.

I loved this movie about the gentle convict who has healing powers. I'm afraid of mice, but I even liked the mouse, who played an important role in the movie. There is a lot of violence in this movie, including a botched execution, but the violence is crucial to the story. The only problem I had with the film was that with one exception it portrayed the Death Row convicts as nice, likable, guys. I don't think your average real life Death Row denizen is noted for his affability.

A very moving and inspiring film. Great performances by all parties involved, an excellent script, and fabulously presented. Definitely one of Hanks' best performances and a surprisingly excellent performance by Michael Clarke Duncan.
