At least I heard people are friendly up there, hey...

Franks will probably disagree, but I think the best things about Manitoba are the highways leading out of it. Colder than the sixth circle of Dante's Hell in winter, dirty and dusty in the summer, with wind fit to scour paint off your car blowing all the damn time, and the biggest, toughest and most voracious flies in the Western hemisphere.

I've been to Manitoba many times. Manitobans tend to have an inferiority complex. They shouldn't. Without the Prairie Provinces and their production, Canada would be an economic basket case.

Some pretty scenery, open space and friendly people; lots of pine trees and lakes in the north; but those fist-sized flesh-eating flies are really special.

It may not have mountains or vast quantities of people, but Manitoba is a very beautiful and wonderful province. Grand Beach is the best beach in all of Canada by far, and one of the best in North America. Winnipeg has some very attractive scenery and some great parks. Even though it's in Western Canada, Manitoba isn't redneck and ignorant like Alberta and Saskatchewan, and isn't all Ken-and-Barbie smugness like B.C. Some of the best and most down-to-earth people in Canada can be found there. It has some of the best fishing and hunting too, for the many Americans who visit in order to kill the local wildlife. A very open-minded and friendly place.

Many days as I watch the cross-Canada weather, the weather forecaster out of Toronto skips Manitoba entirely. Although there is a segment of Toronto population that refuses to recognize life west of the Great Lakes, we're here! Manitoba is a beautiful province, underrated frequently by those who can only see the lack of large cities. Look a little further -- we have spectacular natural beauty ranging from wide and impressive rivers, many clear unspoiled lakes, miles and miles of dense forest, even a small area of desert. We also have the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, recognized for its excellence around the world; every year Folklorama, a celebration of our many ethnic populations, attracts thousands of visitors; the Winnipeg Folk Festival is one of the best in North America. Our economy has few peaks but also few valleys. It's a good place to live and a good place to visit. Come and check it out for yourself!
