Thirty-nine years ago today the greatest rock guitarist of his generation was killed in a freak motorcycle accident. Yeah, he's far down on this list, but we're talking RIA here, where Forrest Gump soul-mates get to vote on Grizz chaw and McDonald's fine dining. I listen to legends such as Chet Atkins and Les Paul, who, when asked who was the best rock guitarist of that generation always mentioned Duane first. Duane was a guitarist's guitarist. Non-musicians haven't got a clue. Here's a little blues for ya; Duane and Boz Scaggs "Going down Slow" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkFOBZRAbMU

Pretty darn good. Defined Southern Rock in the late sixties and early 70's.

His life was cut too short and in the time he had he did not show much.I changed my mind on Duane after listening to The Allman Brothers Band "At Fillmore East [Deluxe Edition]" because he sounded great and so did the band. It is too bad that he died so young, because he probably would have gotten better as he aged.

Brilliant throughout his career, I'm particularly fond of his work on Derek and the Dominos

I  won't talk about his early stuff with The AllmanJoys or The Hourglass- or even get into his great work with The Allmans and his lauded session work for soul, pop, rock, blues and r&b; rstars at Muscle Shoals.Must have something really terrible in a past life to merit being behind the guitarists for Bon Jovi and  Motley Crue on this diseased and insidious excuse for a weblist. Motley Crue and Bon Jovi?  Blasphemous. And some people wonder how Bush got voted in twice....

Can't believe Duane is this far down the list. I think people are basing these on songs played on the radio. The live stuff is in the stratosphere and yet another example of what could have been...

No one else had the gift to play slide and fingered notes with the feeling and freedom as Duane Allman had. Thank You, Duane!

Dwayne was a huge influence on many guitarists especially those with a slide influence. Dave Tronzo a professor at Berklee is a great example....the guy was a complete genius.

A very talented player but I think his slide intonation was noticibly off sometimes. Since several people mentioned it, I think he's way out of tune in several spots on Layla and not just when he's playing above the fretboard. Of course, this is part of what makes slide difficult but Derek Trucks, Sonny Landreth and others manage to nail it, to my ears at least.

Duane was possessed in his playing. His guitar talked. His full potential was never realized in his catapulting ascent in skills.

One question, Who do you think of when you think of the Rock-era style of slide playing? DUANNE ALLMAN was to me the 1st player to have the perfect slide tone together, playing through those plexi Marshalls with his SG's and Les Pauls. Also for me it's impossible to look at a Tobacco Sunburst Les Paul without thinking of him. Those early Allman Brother albums are pure magic with his brother having the perfect voice. Dicky Betts of course is awesome too, he and Duanne forming probrably the 1st truelly killer guitar tandems in one band. Any bootleg Allman's show with Duanne is always killer. Oh yeah "Layla" with Clapton is not too shabby either, , one of the greatest albums ever recorded.

Duane could play anything, not just slide and blew the minds of everyone who saw him play or played with him. Why else would Clapton let him play almost all the leads on the album Layla. He came up with the Signature Lick for Layla, not Clapton. I love Clapton, but Duane blew him away on that album with his slide and straight guitar playing. He influenced a generation of guitar players much like Hendrix and Van Halen have done, but he is my personal favorite.

Slash is the Best guitarist of all times. he is not at the top of the charts because the other guitarist belong to the classic rock style. They made Rock n' roll famous.

Duane was an exceptionally talented young guitar player when he was killed. He recorded amazing, killer stuff, not just with the Allman Brothers, but with a wide variety of other artists, check out his "Anthology" Albums,1 and 2.Had he not died so young,I bet he'd be in the top 5 of this list!

Duane Allman was the best guitarist ever--by far the most versatile. he did it without all the special effects as well--just sheer genius.

Duane Allman not only was a founding member of the Allman Brothers, he played with other artists in his relatively brief career cut short by a deadly motorcycle crash. Artists like Eric clapton, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Boz Scaggs, King Curtis and Delaney and Bonnie just to name a few.

An unbelivable talent that left us when he was only 24. Along with cohort Dickey Betts, formed the nucleus of the most talented band of all time. The product that still tours as the Allman Brothers Band, featuring Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks on duel lead guitars is without equal in today's crop of bands but there would be no present music scene without the vision and scope of Duane Allman. He was, and still is, a man among boys when it came to playing lead or slide guitar. The best slide guitar ever and the reason wht we still hear Layla played on the radio today. Long live the 'Skydog' may his memory never leave us.

The best guitarist ever. in the three years prior to his death he was used on some 18 albums as a session man because he was the best around. he completely outshines clapton (whom i also rate very highly) on the derek and the dominos album (why does love got to be so sad), shame he never got the recognition he deserved, particuarly here in england, as the allman bros never had a chart placing higher than 47, so remains unknown here

He was not just a great slide player but also a top flight acoustic player,as his much copied classic 'Little Martha' shows.

Duane is the 2nd best guitarist in my opinion and in Eric Claptons opinion the greatst he said himself. The riff on layla was done by Duane not Clapton by the way

Could be the greatest slide player, but I'm not sure that makes him the best guitar player overall ever.
