I'm more fearful of the increased hidden fees. E.g. $15 to carry an extra bag, $2 for a soda???

I'm in far more danger driving on the DC beltway than in a jet any day of the week and twice on Sunday. . .

I wholeheartedly agree that we shouldn't fear to get on with our lives by continuing to do what we do and that we're more likely to get hit by a bus than we are a terrorist, but lets be realistic here. I remember after the 7/7 bombings in London and how terrified people were to get back on the tubes (or subways as you call them). I mean I raise my glass to those people who did and some of them like myself had no choice to get around, but let me tell you the day after I didn't see one person on that tube travelling on those same lines who looked as if they were on a Summer holiday.

I think it's okay to talk about Fear of Travel. But I also agree with abichara that fear of travel doesn't have to prevent us from traveling. I've been traveling for over twenty-five years and there's plenty of reasons to be fearful that have nothing to do with terrorism - you can lose your luggage, get accidentally run over by a bicycle - fall off a cliff - the possibilities are endless.
The reason I wrote The Fearful Traveler's Companion was to let other travelers know that fear is a normal and healthy part of travel. And for people who are too afraid to travel these days, they should know that many of us who do travel have decided that the trip or the adventure is worth the discomfort. Step out of your comfort zone! Sometimes it's worth it.

Why should we be afraid to travel? Terrorism happens everywhere, there's little we as citizens can do to predict exactly when and where it's going to happen. Tourists may not be travelling to Iraq for some time now, but we can't let the potential for terrorism define our decision making. Unless you're the adventurous type, stay away from war zones. I don't believe we should limit the amount of places we can be allowed to see. I personally enjoy traveling and I'll be damned if I let a few terrorists control what I do. Have fun, you only live once. It's sometimes better just to keep the TV off, especially the big three news channels (CNN, FOX, & MSNBC). They have a tendency of hyping up threats unnecessarily; it brings in ratings and keeps people afraid. Terrorism has always been a threat, the odds of one of us being caught in an attack is about as much as being struck by lightning. Fear freezes action and logic; no one should go down that track.

This has not been a factor for me. I could die at any given moment for any given reason. I cannot live my life in fear. I love travel and the very minimal risk that my plane will be struck will not change that.

I recently accepted a job that I almost turned down, due to the fact that it involves some travel to DC and NYC, 2 major US cities. I only accepted the job offer after the organization reassured me that the travel would be minimal. Nevertheless, Im still experiencing a great deal of anxiety at the thought of taking the train to these destinations, given the recent Madrid bombings, and new threats of attacks in major US cities this summer. It doesn't help to think that little is being done to protect our rail lines. The fear is so great that I often contemplate rescinding my acceptance!

Almost exactly a year after the 9/11 attack, I went on my first ever plane journey. The destination was New York, and I didn't give this fact any thought until I arrived back in Scotland two weeks later. Security was tight, the journey there and back was smooth, and I had no fears at all. Planning to go back this year too.

The fear of travel in this nation, espescially on airlines, has directly contributed to the faltering economy, causing a major airline carrier to go out of business recently.

I've always been worrisome when thinking of visiting another country. 9-11 just brought those fears up very slightly. There's always crazy people who are jealous of America's liberties; they will always be that way.

Flying in a plane at this point in time is much more safe than walking down the street. The 9/11 hijackings were a wake up call that never should have happend. Airline security should have been this good in the infancy of air travel

I myself have always hated planes. I'm really aerophobic. So this is not very troubling to me. Everyone else's increased fear of travel has either not been evident or not been a bother or been nonexistant to me. Perhaps I am a fool, but travel has not shifted position on my list of fears.

Ironically, this is probably the safest time ever to travel by air. Stilllll, I find myself lightly paranoid and cringing at the thought. If I were up for traveling at the moment though, I probably would not hesitate to do so. Hey, even if they tried it again, they can’t turn every plane into a weapon of mass destruction.

Many people are already scared to travel for the sole reason that they are fearful of terrorists. This is a terrible thing that this could cause so much fear in our society. It is definitely a lasting and troubling consequence.

There has probably never been a safer time to travel. While the delays are slightly annoying, I'm loving the cheap fares and uncrowded flights now - let's just hope the airlines can stay in business.
