 | Miles Teg (0) 05/18/2004 | Do you really believe that the GOVERNMENT can solve the problems of hunger, unemployment, national debt, and/or foriegn relations? The government is only good for building roads, upkeeping parks, and all the other non-essential facets of american life that noone else is willing to pay for. The trillions that will be spent on space exploration could not be spent more wisely. Most of our problems can be solved only by further expansion(the single factor that contributed most to our immense wealth and power). That expasion must either by outward or upward, and not many of us favor an actively expansionist america, so the only other option is upward.

 | abichara (66) 01/25/2004 | Yes, maybe we have 600 billion dollars lying around somewhere. Of course, this is the cost right now, but NASA like all government bureaucracies always understate the cost of all their ventures. Expect that this will cost trillions. I'm not one who doesn't support space exploration, it brings many benefits to people down here on Earth. But I think that if Bush wants to go to Mars, I would say that he should privatize NASA already. The reason why space exploration has waned since the 1980's is because the government space agency consists of self-impressed bureaucrats who haven't had a good idea in a very long time. Frankly, Bush has a very poor sense of timing; in a time when we're running huge deficits, he continues to propose government initiatives that continue to add to the national debt. The bottom line, this wreaks of political showmanship.

 | Redoedo (41) 01/25/2004 | When 35 million Americans are living in poverty, 43 million Americans are without health insurance, millions are without jobs, and we are waging a multi-front War on Terrorism, clearly the most important thing on our agenda is to go to Mars. Expect a speech from Bush on this soon, in which he will present evidence that the Martians are developing WMDs, and are wanted in the theft of 10 million Mars Bars. Clearly, Mars is a threat to national security, and we must go in now, regardless of the cost, as no cost is too high to protect the American people and get those damned candybars back.
