I know this is meant to be humorous but the concept of state sovereignty was a big issue for these guys. If we go to popular vote (only) to elect the president, nobody would ever campaign in any of the smaller states. At least now there's a reason for someone in Nebraska or Wyoming to vote in the presidential election.

it may not be a popular opinion, but the electoral college was a good idea. the electoral college allows the votes in small states to be as important as those in large states. when al gore won the popular vote in 2000, most of his votes came from the urban population centers, while bush's came primarily from the heartland.
