 | Sundiszno (32) 04/06/2004 | There is more than just government gridlock in the DC area - and I-495 is another gridlock. The beltway is a mess; rush-hour traffic is misnamed, because nothing rushes during rush hour - it crawls. Accidents can be spectacular, and can really screw up a morning or evening commute; what might normally take an hour can turn into four or five in a hearbeat. I know - I lived through it for about 20 years, and it got worse by the day. Wilson Bridge, connecting MD and VA, is a nightmare. So is the Springfield Interchange, about eight miles down the road in Virginia. It's just no fun to drive the Beltway. Right now, there is construction going on both at Wilson Bridge and Springfiels; thes projects started about four years ago and are slated (last I heard) to run another four to six years before completion. In the meantime, those areas are slower and more dangerous than ever. Add to the mix the wide variety of drivers (Maryland drivers are really the pits), including Sout American and African dipolomats who have no idea as to how to drive in the snow, and you have some really challenging situations. I go there only grudgingly now when I have to.
