I-81 is not that great with all the North South heavy truck traffic. The Virginia section could use three lanes.

A good alternative to staying on I-95 through the Washington, DC area (but it does take you out of the way and add miles to the trip if you're headed toward New York or Philadelphia). It's scenic, and traffic moves well along it.

I-81 running through the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia has some of the most scenic interstate driving on the Eastern Seaboard. If you have time, get off the highway and onto the Parkway, you get a better feel for the land. The Shenandoah Monument is a nice place to visit, lots of interesting scenery and excellent hiking.
