 | IrishBob (0) 03/13/2007 | Gary Bettman is doing a fine job. He's kept the Pens in Pittsburgh, a city that sells out almost every game. He's cracked down on obstruction and made the game faster & better to watch. The new rules are great.
Sure, the lock out season stunk, but the NHL was beginning to go tthe route of MLB and who wants that? He did the right thing and I admire the guy for sticking to a plan and executing it.

 | CanadaSucks (50) 03/23/2006 | Over-expanded the league into places that never cared about hockey while alienating the areas that love the sport (the migration of Canadian teams has had a debilitating effect). . .Bettman had a great mid-90's, but not having a major national cable contract is a real indicator of a lack of leadership. . .this is a great game undone by some real mistakes. . .

 | Ih8rateitall (5) 03/22/2006 | Who is this? That's the problem with the NHL, no one knows who these dudes are. The NHL also lies about their fan attendance, shame on you Gary Bettman, shame on you.

 | irishgit (156) 02/16/2005 | I think he's still trying to open the first hockey puck he was given. This guy gives self-respecting jackasses a bad name. Much of the problems the NHL is having can be laid at this man's door. He expanded into marginal markets, and is too stubborn to see the failure of that experiment. He refuses to acknowledge that the game itself has become fundamentally flawed, and has gone from an exciting sport to a dull and grinding bore. He has indulged in a foolish and selfish display of machismo with the NHLPA which can do no one any good. The best thing that could come out of the lock out is the collapse of 4 or 5 teams and this doofus getting canned.

 | alpepper (22) 02/16/2005 | He did it. The first major sport to scrub a season. Couldn't have been possible without Bettman. Here's the dude who dilutes NHL talent by expanding the league to any sleepy burg that will cough up $100 MIL and build a new arena. Here's the dude who sits with his thumb up his butt while the game turns from The fastest and most exciting sport to a game with less scoring than soccer, boring neutral zone traps, and outright thuggery like stick poking. Thanks to Commissioner Dude, the NHL became so irrelevant, that SpongeBob had better ratings than the Stanley Cup. The owners are signing players with huge JACK but cry the blues over cost control. Of course Mr. Commish stages a lockout and obviously has never heard of the word compromise. Now the NHL season is dead. I always viewed hockey as one of the Big 4 Sports. But now I can't. Maybe the new #4 is (GULP) NASCAR or (Double Gulp) Soccer. I feel bad for Canada because we in the U.S. hijacked and destroyed the sport (Pity cities like Winnipeg that loved their hockey team but lose it to a hockey hotbed like freakin' Phoenix who can't draw 8,000 on a good day. Credit Gary Bettman for this mess. Like the skipper of the Titanic, may he go down with the ship.

 | samjung23 (4) 01/18/2005 | Agree with all the posters here about his expansion practices and devastating rule changes. But something needs to be done about this lockout, it's insane! Looking at the proposals, it seems the owners really want to screw the players! Are they really willing to risk losing tons of cash for a couple bucks? While Bettman's at it, he may as well have redirected some airstrikes from Baghdad to NHL head offices and stadiums and be damned with the whole thing!

 | harold-insane (0) 09/29/2004 | During the last NHLPA lock out, he allowed the freshly drawn up CBA to have no cap even though that was the primary reason for the work stoppage. He allowed the owners to come to the spoken agreement that they would keep the players' salaries within reason. The owners obviously threw this agreement out the window when big name players became free agents. He gave in to the players and this is why there is will be no hockey in 04/05.

 | RainMan12 (0) 08/23/2004 | Bettman has ceratinly made the National Hockey League more prosperous economincally, but has hurt the league competition wise by having too many teams. Expansion has diluted the league big-time. If it wasn't for the Europeans, this league would be like the American Hockey League with a multitude of muckers and grinders. Bettman should have put more teams in Texas, i.e. Houston, Austin and San Antonio. Minor League Hockey is prosperous in that state in small towns. Just because you place teams in rising televison markets, i.e. Nashville, doesn't mean that market will support the franchise past its inaugural season.

 | Stu Whitney (0) 06/15/2004 | Gary Betman is the worst thing that has happend to the NHL. He has oppend markets in city's that have no intrest' and has closed markets where there is a want and need. This is not the NBA so srew off and leave our Canadian game alone. You didn't know anything about the league when you came in, and it is apperent that you still know nothing.

 | DavCar (0) 03/06/2004 | Likes to kill hockey in small markets. The NHL should get rid of this guy before the NHL goes under.
