 | Gentle Jude (23) 10/03/2005 | Before I read these comments below, I thought that maybe it was a good thing that fathers weren't too strict like they used to be. But now, I definitely see the wisdom of the comments below me and think it is absolutely right. Fathers these days are not the same as they used to be. How can you respect someone you are no fear of? It is healthy to have that parental relationship which isn't equal. Calling them a friend is a destructive thing to do because it teaches children not to respect authority and more seriously, it will teach them not to respect God. Teaching your children obedience will make them happy adults. If a father befriends their children, they will lose them as friends when they grow up.

 | Randyman (103) 05/08/2005 | My personal pet peeve. I've always told my kids I'm not their friend I'm their father. Friends are peers and that's why so many fathers don't get respect. The kids see them as peers. It is not an equal relationship. My Favorite saying to my kids when they were growing up was This is not a democracy, it is a dictatorship, and I'm the dictator. They hated it but they respected me. Now that they are older we are all best friends.

 | irishgit (138) 01/16/2005 | There's a lot of bad parenting out there. And a lot of it is due to parents not wanting to take responsibility for being parents. Your kids aren't your friends, they're your responsibility until they're adults, and you have some duties to perform. If you don't have the stomach to perform them, you shouldn't have taken on the job in the first place.
