 | bibliophile (10) 09/13/2004 | A moment of simple honesty from Bush. He believes it because he believes it. Not because he can back it up with substance, but just because he already believes it, and clinging blindly to his belief in tax cuts is easier than reevaluating his position.

 | abichara (60) 02/20/2004 | Here's what Bush told former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill about his plan to add triggers to the tax cuts. I won't negotiate with myself, it's that simple. If someone comes to me with a plan for this, and they have a significant amount of political backing, I'll sit down with them--talk it out. But until then, it's a closed issue. The President has to be able to negotiate with himself on the basis of sound policy. I'm all for tax cuts personally, they do have a stimulative effect on the economy. But you also need to reconcile this with the need for a healthy national economy and a sound monetary system. Bush cared about the politics of the matter because it was right on principle; forget about the numbers, if it feels good, then do it. This mentality is way too common in our world.
