Other than the Gulf War, has there been an effective program turned over to the UN, which they can point to with pride in its success? In the last 20 years? 30 years?

The Bush Administration's primary reasoning for entering Iraq was to make sure that its petrodollars would be traded in American dollars rather than Euros. Abandoning Iraq to the United Nations would be just as bad as defeat for the Bush Administration; the justification for war would be gone. We would be right where we started in the first place, US hegemony in the Middle East would have to take a backseat. Officially we've incurred about $200 billion in debt because of this war. It's becoming more and more apparent that Iraqi oil sales isn't the silver bullet that can solve all our re-construction problems. Besides, it's kind of difficult to re-build the place when there is a guerrilla insurgency taking place within the country. Eventually we will have to cut our losses, especially being that this is turning into a nationalistic struggle against the US.

If the United Nations got at all involved in the whole Iraq situation, Bush would possibly lose control over the Middle Eastern country's oil supplies, which is the entire reason the United States even went into Iraq to overthrow Saddam. Other billionaires and corporations also have interests in money-making in Iraq.
