ABBA 5

"ABBAHATERS" will be the name for the green race in the sequel to "Avatar".
As others have pointed out, WTF does the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have to do with rock and roll? They seem to base things solely on sales...by which standard Pat Boone should be in there as well.

Jann Wenner's family should be forced to torture him with dentist tools and a blowtorch.I'm banging away on some coconuts and shouting in a hoarse voice as we speak. Schedule my induction for 2032 please.

Yeah, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is really irrelevant anymore. Might as well take Joan Jett now...

Eh....They're no worse than many recent inductees inluding Metallica, Aerosmith and Genesis, although arguably ABBA and Madonna (inducted 2008) hardly qualify as rock.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has been stuck in a full-blown identity crisis for at least a decade as far as I can tell. I'm sure it's still an honor for the recipients, but for the rest of us, being told 20-30 years hence that the Beatles or Bob Marley may have had some kind of impact on the music industry isn't particularly revelatory. Given that fact...what's the point of their existence in the first place? Back-patting, I suppose.

This organization is on schedule for demise in the next decade or so.

I know they don't really sound the same, but ABBA always remind me of Alvin and the Chipmunks. Maybe both groups could go in as a double entry.

UPDATE:
Apparently they just got elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The sound you hear is the last remaining shred of integrity of that worthless commercial institution circling a greasy toilet bowl.

Apparently the definition of rock and roll includes music more gutless and bland than I had previously realized. I just read that ABBA was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Congratulations to all the drunk housewives at wedding receptions who have kept the flame alive for this band over the course of the last 30 years!

ABBA induction has a particular meaning. It's not only a prestigious acknowledgement, but one of few receveid from quality jury. The swedish group, in fact, got popular success, but was victim of continuos discrimination from snob people. In the last years, with a totally ABBA songs dedicated-musical,MAMMA MIA!, many people are changing idea.
About that people says:"....but ABBA is not ROCK!..." Tell me WHAT YOU MEAN ABOUT ROCK!! CAN YOU EXPLAINE IN AN ARITHMETIC WAY????????
Making a bief rock history, it was born in mid-'50's circa, with artist as Bill Haley and The Comets, Little Richard, Roy Orbison, Chuck Berry, Elvis,.....to pass in '60's with Beatles, Rolling Stones, Who, .......until Progressive-Rock, 70's glam-rock, punk, disco, punk, funk, r&b, hip-hop..................
What is ROCK BETWEEN ALL THOSE GENRES?????
And then who's been scadalized about their induction, are you sure to know good ABBA?????
Finally, I'm a Donna Summer, Kiss, Red hot chili Peppers,.......and music fan genertally, but I think it's been better iduct ABBA.

Well, well - this certainly seems to be a real love/hate category. I am definitely in the first category; still loving the beat and the smooth blend of those voices. They can keep the glitz-wear of course but I sincerely doubt they're wearing it any longer anyway. They still command a significant fan base to this day...as evidenced by the huge sale of the ABBA gold cd and the success of the musical Mamma Mia. Even if I hated them I'd still have to admit they have a stellar track record and deserve recognition.

A) The term "Rock and Roll" originates from slang for having sex, the leading lady's of ABBA are certainly doable. B) No band has ever had the range that ABBA had, from the folk of "People Need Love" to the Anti-war of "Soldiers" to the unearthly feel of "Visitors" and just about every genre in between. B) These people were conceived during the final days of World War Two(except Agnetha) with bombs going off all over and Europe in ruins...Now thats rock and roll A) Yup, that spells ABBA

They need more disco in the HOF besides the Bee Gees and this is as good as the genre got. EVERYONE LOVES ABBA! Dont even try to deny it. Their music has stood the test of time more then any other disco act and even most acts from the 70s. Tons of rock bands love them too like U2. They had great vocalists, songwriters and producers in the group too, all making a winning combination. These guys and gals need to be inducted ASAP!

You often wonder why some bands make it and some bands don't. ABBA to date, has sold almost 400,000,000 units total, ranking them second only to the beatles. With these credentials alone should at least get them a table! The legion of fans that still follow this band after breaking up almost 30 years ago is phenominal! These fans would surely buy tickets today, as if they were an up and coming band. How mant acts out there were offered up to a billion dollars to reunite for a tour, i don't think any other than ABBA. Please anyone, prove me wrong!

Absolutely.  Definitely.  I asked my Eight- Ball whether ABBA should be in and the answer came back:  "It is decidedly so."  Just for confirmation, I asked again, this time specifically querying if the first answer was dependable.  "You Can Rely on It." was the second reply.
Actually, no such divination is needed.  Blondie is in and ABBA is not?  I used to think that liking a couple of their songs was just one of those guilty pleasures.  But after seeing "Mama Mia" I had to admit that ABBA has a substantial body of work.  "Waterloo" is infectious. And there was progression in their work.  "The Winner Takes It All" and "The Name of the Game" have more down-to-earth, world-weary views of love and acceptance of its pitfalls than their earlier hits.

I can't believe they are not already in it and if not, why not? They were the soundtrack of the late 70s/early 80s and made tuneful well sung records that have already become standards in many ways. I can't think of any other group since then with as much talent. Pity they wore fur coats; no one is perfect.

Some of the comments here are extraordinarly narrow minded. Now, let me say first I dont own a single ABBA record. However, after the Beatles, they have shifted more units than any other pop and rock group. More than Floyd or Zep. Their music is ubiquitous and many of their singles have become classics, staples of karaokes and singalongs. I challenge anyone in the Western world not to be able to hum along at least half a dozen Abba tunes. They've spawned musicals and a whole industry of tribute acts. This is a lot more than can be said for Metallica, Iron Maiden etc

If you really read their lyrics without listening to their music they are pretty astounding. The music and the voices are top notch whether its your style or not. They were amazing live. If you look at others in the Hall of Fame they are not all rock. If you look at the ideals behind the Hall of Fame they look for musicians that have impacted music. I would think that a strong statement on a group like Abba is they have no copycats and it is incredibly difficult to duplicate them. They wrote their own lyrics, music, played many of their own instruments and virtually revolutionized the video industry. I have really grown to respect them over the last 20 years as I have many groups of many different genres. They truly apart in the world of music.

Love them always have! A guilty pleasure, sure! Many earlier artists from the 50's and early 60's that have made it into the Hall aren't/weren't as influential as ABBA have been to the music world. Most Americans don't know their ABBA's whole body of work and have a tendency of judging them too quickly. I think it's amazing that they were able to cross language/cultural barriers. They were from Sweden, and took it upon themselves to work harder to make it. I'd like to see any American artist around these days, or even back when ABBA were famous, sing in Swedish!
