ItemImageBlondie may have had a string of number one hits and Talking Heads may have won the hearts of the critics, but the Cars were the most successful American new wave band to emerge in the late '70s. With their sleek, mechanical pop/rock, the band racked up a string of platinum albums and Top 40 singles that made them one of the most popular American rock & roll bands of the late '70s and early '80s. While they were more commercially oriented than their New York peers, the Cars were nevertheless inspired by proto-punk, ... Read More... at allmusic.com

One of the best rock bands ever! How did Blondie get in when they didn't? Phenominal band. They are more deserved than most and should have in their first year of eligibility.

One of the most groundbreaking bands of the late 70s/early 80s. You just felt a little bit cooler when you listened to the Cars. Every time you turned on the radio, you could hear this great band, and their music still holds up today!

They trump over many of the bands that are getting in before. They revolutionized new wave and fashion.

Easily the best rock band of their time. So many of their songs are embedded in our national psyche it's hard to believe they aren't in the hall!

No way. Their best song is now an advertising jingle. Their great moment, though, was their hit "Moving in Stereo" being used as background music for the classic pool scene in the movie Fast Times at Ridgmont High featuring Phoebe Cates and Judge Reinhold.

I only ever was aware of their song Drive (or whatever) and seeing it on the 1985 Live Aid show. It was very moving and for that reason alone they will get four stars from me. No reason at all why they should not go in the Hall of Fame. I am sure there are may far less worthy already in it!

Strong band but extraordinary tiresome after four or five albums. Indecipherable lyrics that sound deep at first but quickly wearing. When they were great, they were great. But strictly a band of its time, and addition of Todd Rundgren this time around hasn't refreshed anything.

Pros: String of classic singles had an immeasurable impact on countless future greats. Cons: Far too much mediocrity mixed amongst the standout tracks.

I agree with BenjaminBurns 100%! I don't like Tom Cruise, but I don't sit around and gossip about him! People need to get a life and stop being jelous, asinine, idiots! The Cars rule and all you wannabe's drool!

Why do some of you guys sit around and gossip about them? Ric was multi-talented, you know writing all those songs. Ben had the voice, Elliot knew how to play, Greg was in the groove, and David rocked away! There is not one of their songs that I don't like. They will R-O-C-K forever!

Bunch of radio friendly, sanitized trendy pop crap with no real substance to it. Take a few guys with disco haircuts and suits, create some slapdash pop melodies, add some campy keyboard sounds and some semi-comical vocalizations by that Ric Ocasek idiot and you'll sell, sell, sell!!! Pure formula dung for the "let's get dressed up sharp, go clubbing and get a pina colada" 80's yuppie crowd. Very forgettable.

great tune, one of the musically produced songs of the 80s , songs like 'you might think im crazy' and 'drive'. Too bad Ben died 'RIP', let them in, it's been a long wait.

I'd give 'em six stars if I could! Just listen to the music, it says it all! The Cars were the fathers of the major new wave sound. They deserve to be commemorated in the Rock Hall so their legend will live on!

Post punk/new wave would never have gotten foothold in pop culture without these guys! How do you keep "Just What I Needed" out of the Hall of Fame?

Influenced so many of today's rock bands. Don't say this band is "gay" without checking YOUR favorite band's influences first! This band is usually one of them. Really Bitchin' Band!!!!

These guys definitely should be there! They were at the forefront of the new wave movement in the late 70's. I wore out my 8-track of Candy-O. Ben Orr never got the respect he deserved, even though he wrote better songs AND had a better voice than Ocasik.

The Cars were one of those band with an unforgetable sound. They were part of the 70's & 80's. Great songs came from them. They have inspired many bands along the way, and still do.

A group that never did get the respect they earned and maybe never will. Unfortunantly even if they did some how get inducted Benjamin Orr wouldn't be able to attend due to his death from cancer in 2000. The first music video I ever saw and is still my favorite was Drive. Some of my favorite songs by this group include my favorite song Drive, All Mixed Up, Moving In Stereo, Just What I Needed, Candy O, Let's Go, Bye Bye Love, and Let The Good Times Roll all sung mostly by Benjamin Orr. I also like Magic, Heartbeat City, and even Door To Door sung mostly by Ric Ocasek. Even their solo stuff was awesome! By far my favorite music group and favorite musician(Benjamin Orr). The others groups I like include Tom Petty and Brooks & Dunn(country).

Unmistakable classic sound. One of a handful of bands that cannot be mistaken for any other group when you hear their music (such as the Doobie Brothers, Abba, AC/DC, and Cheap Trick).

The Cars were creative. They had a catchy sound that incorporated traditional rock with the burgeouning New Wave Punk of the late 70's. The Cars were one of the many bands that saved Rock and Roll from Prog Rock. For that reason alone they should be in. Also Ric Ocasek has went on to become a quality music producer. Sadly one of the members, Elliot Easton I believe passed away due to Cancer. All other members are still alive to accept the award!

The Cars are considered to be the most success band to come out of the new wave era bigger than Blondie, Talking Heads, and Duran Duran. The Cars need to be inducted.

A great band but again, not an influencial one. Bands who get into the hall of fame usually changed the way musicians approached and played music after them. This band did not have that kind of effect. Unfortunately, I cant give my vote here.

Never mind that the Cars sound dated...the Platters sound is dated and they are still in! The Cars defined a certain sound in rock and should be nominated on their first release ALONE!

While they sounded cool and different to those of us in High School or Jr.High when they first came out-they didn't stand the test of time and now sound dated and boring.

Absurd that the greatest crossover group of all time (they've been labeled punk, new wave, hard rock, soft rock, dance, and adult contemporary at the same time) is not in there yet. Maybe they'll get voted in by the Veteran's Committee (the sight of a bunch of old rockers on their last brain cells deciding who gets in would be a sight for sore eyes).
