Ocasek's respect for Suicide trumps his bands mediocrity.

No way. Their best song was an advertising jingle for the now defunct Circuit City. Their great moment, though, was their hit "Moving in Stereo" being used as background music for the classic pool scene in the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High featuring Phoebe Cates and Judge Reinhold.
Lindy3953 08/15/2009
Typical eighties band. Good but not good enough and career not long and prolific enough.

The cars es la mejor banda de su tiempo. Merecn estar en el salon de la fama desde hace tiempo, le pese a quien le pese.
MacDaNife 07/03/2009
unique 80s leaders, but not enough to warrent inclusion with so many classic rock bands still on the outside looking in.
nabe 04/26/2009
Back in the 70's when I saw them in concert, I remember telling my friends, if it wasn't for the synth the sound was empty. Two years or so I saw the new Cars with Todd Rundgren and Kasim Sultan on tour. Good show, rock and roll but they don't belong in the Hall of Fame. Todd does!
devasic1 04/23/2009
If blondie and the pretenders can be in the HOF for New Wave, then there is no reason the definitive new wave band, The Cars, should not be included too!
GuardianAngel 03/22/2009
Maybe in 10 years once Deep Purple is already voted rightfully in...
detroitdiezel 01/30/2008
One of the best rock bands ever! How did Blondie get in when they didn't? Phenominal band. They are more deserved than most and should have in their first year of eligibility.
stingr22 12/26/2007
One of the most groundbreaking bands of the late 70s/early 80s. You just felt a little bit cooler when you listened to the Cars. Every time you turned on the radio, you could hear this great band, and their music still holds up today!
bojanthebest 12/17/2007
one of the best of the new wave artist
stones80123 10/20/2007
They trump over many of the bands that are getting in before. They revolutionized new wave and fashion.

Mikeymo 06/09/2007
Easily the best rock band of their time. So many of their songs are embedded in our national psyche it's hard to believe they aren't in the hall!
Polina 05/28/2007
I only ever was aware of their song Drive (or whatever) and seeing it on the 1985 Live Aid show. It was very moving and for that reason alone they will get four stars from me. No reason at all why they should not go in the Hall of Fame. I am sure there are may far less worthy already in it!
pipelayer64 05/05/2007
one of the best bands of the 80's they where and still are one of my favorites
redfootball 05/03/2007
Strong band but extraordinary tiresome after four or five albums. Indecipherable lyrics that sound deep at first but quickly wearing. When they were great, they were great. But strictly a band of its time, and addition of Todd Rundgren this time around hasn't refreshed anything.
Caspery 04/07/2007
Pros: String of classic singles had an immeasurable impact on countless future greats. Cons: Far too much mediocrity mixed amongst the standout tracks.

I agree with BenjaminBurns 100%! I don't like Tom Cruise, but I don't sit around and gossip about him! People need to get a life and stop being jelous, asinine, idiots! The Cars rule and all you wannabe's drool!
BenjaminBurns 02/15/2007
Why do some of you guys sit around and gossip about them? Ric was multi-talented, you know writing all those songs. Ben had the voice, Elliot knew how to play, Greg was in the groove, and David rocked away! There is not one of their songs that I don't like. They will R-O-C-K forever!
grungeisdead 01/31/2007
overrated noise
MapleRock 01/27/2007
Gettin into the Hall is just what they needed.
GreggOrange 01/23/2007
Bunch of radio friendly, sanitized trendy pop crap with no real substance to it. Take a few guys with disco haircuts and suits, create some slapdash pop melodies, add some campy keyboard sounds and some semi-comical vocalizations by that Ric Ocasek idiot and you'll sell, sell, sell!!! Pure formula dung for the "let's get dressed up sharp, go clubbing and get a pina colada" 80's yuppie crowd. Very forgettable.
watergrass 01/16/2007
great tune, one of the musically produced songs of the 80s , songs like 'you might think im crazy' and 'drive'. Too bad Ben died 'RIP', let them in, it's been a long wait.
unaiming42you 01/10/2007
It's ridiculous!!!!!!!!! Should had been in 2005.
licatbbdayy21r ere 01/09/2007
should had been in long time ago. It's really is insane that theyre not.
divergonefishi ng54 01/08/2007
Drive was my fav. song and i scored...that's why i had to give it a 3 stars. Seriously, they should had been in 2006.
StarCollector 11/07/2006
I'd give 'em six stars if I could! Just listen to the music, it says it all! The Cars were the fathers of the major new wave sound. They deserve to be commemorated in the Rock Hall so their legend will live on!
marto 05/24/2006
didnt last long
magoo3985 04/27/2006
Listen Blondie is already in, so these guys deserve it. All of the other late 70's early 80's punk/new wave/alternative acts are in and The Cars deserve to join them.
redleg13 04/17/2006
Post punk/new wave would never have gotten foothold in pop culture without these guys! How do you keep "Just What I Needed" out of the Hall of Fame?
tamaplayer5450 1 03/01/2006
The Cars have been a huge influence in my life of music ever since I first learned how to use a record player, and for being 23 and a metalhead I have a lot of respect for this band.......R.I.P.----Ben Orr
Elliotfiend 02/01/2006
Influenced so many of today's rock bands. Don't say this band is "gay" without checking YOUR favorite band's influences first! This band is usually one of them. Really Bitchin' Band!!!!
Habs10 11/29/2005
ran out of gas, who's gonna drive you home?
Diamond Dave 11/27/2005
No way DRIVE was one of the best songs of the 80's, but these guys can't rub shoulders with Deep Purple.
Robbo59 11/13/2005
Among the wuss bands that ruined music as we knew it. Flagship for the gender=bender crowd.
Rockon64 09/30/2005
These guys definitely should be there! They were at the forefront of the new wave movement in the late 70's. I wore out my 8-track of Candy-O. Ben Orr never got the respect he deserved, even though he wrote better songs AND had a better voice than Ocasik.
Wipa Watson 09/14/2005
The Cars were one of those band with an unforgetable sound. They were part of the 70's & 80's. Great songs came from them. They have inspired many bands along the way, and still do.
80sRocked 08/07/2005
A group that never did get the respect they earned and maybe never will. Unfortunantly even if they did some how get inducted Benjamin Orr wouldn't be able to attend due to his death from cancer in 2000. The first music video I ever saw and is still my favorite was Drive. Some of my favorite songs by this group include my favorite song Drive, All Mixed Up, Moving In Stereo, Just What I Needed, Candy O, Let's Go, Bye Bye Love, and Let The Good Times Roll all sung mostly by Benjamin Orr. I also like Magic, Heartbeat City, and even Door To Door sung mostly by Ric Ocasek. Even their solo stuff was awesome! By far my favorite music group and favorite musician(Benjamin Orr). The others groups I like include Tom Petty and Brooks & Dunn(country).
SZinHonshu 07/27/2005
Unmistakable classic sound. One of a handful of bands that cannot be mistaken for any other group when you hear their music (such as the Doobie Brothers, Abba, AC/DC, and Cheap Trick).
kingguiness 07/14/2005
The Cars were creative. They had a catchy sound that incorporated traditional rock with the burgeouning New Wave Punk of the late 70's. The Cars were one of the many bands that saved Rock and Roll from Prog Rock. For that reason alone they should be in. Also Ric Ocasek has went on to become a quality music producer. Sadly one of the members, Elliot Easton I believe passed away due to Cancer. All other members are still alive to accept the award!
vanhalenrules 05/10/2005
The Cars are considered to be the most success band to come out of the new wave era bigger than Blondie, Talking Heads, and Duran Duran. The Cars need to be inducted.
ralph vincent 05/07/2005
good god yes.
steveperry 05/06/2005
The Cars deserve to be in
journey2006 05/06/2005
The Cars deserve to be in the hall of Fame. Ric Ocasek is a very unique singer. They were big stars on MTV, and they made a number of classic rock hits like Just What I Needed.
