 | abichara (66) 09/25/2004 | Corporate welfare is one of the primary reasons we have incurred such a high deficit over the past 4 years. Such policies reduce innovation and efficiency plus they distort the true market value of commodities, usually raising prices. The energy bill was partially a political payoff but it was also done to support government aims that are unsustainable in the free market. This country does not have a sustainable energy policy besides raising consumption. Of course, economic growth is a worthy goal, but we must look at alternate sources of energy. Such payoff's only encourage our dependency on fossil fuels rather than work towards finding other sources of energy that are practical and sustainable. Bush claims that he's working towards that goal, but his policies indicate otherwise. Like in other sectors, the government is essentially putting a band-aid on what can be a major problem in the near-future concerning our energy supplies.
