Personally, I'd put this slightly behind "team" sports because it often lacks the element of bonding and being part of something bigger than oneself.

That being said, some kids prefer competing with themselves than with others, and if thats their niche, it should be encouraged. As in all things, however, the parent should examine their own motives. The kid should be doing it because they want to, not because the parent is living vicariously, or hoping for a big payday down the road.

Sports and expenditure of physical energy come somewhat natural in children. As far as it is possible, getting kids engage in some sports will be very beneficial in the long run.

I prefer team sports, but individual sports are still a good way to spend some time...keeps kids out of trouble.

Based on my track record (hehe) I would encourage any kid I eventualy come up with to at least try some distance running. It has been good to me.

This is the same as team sports for me. This is great and if individual sports included weight lifting and general exercise at the gym, I would give that a 5 definitely. But since individual sports vary, it is not something I would force on a child because of the problem that some children just may not be good at sports. But I can see the advantages in it such as making friends, good exercise, boosts self-confidence.

this if iffy for me. I would gladly encourage my children to participate in sports only if THEY are interested in trying a sport. i would be at every game cheering them on. However,I would never push them into sports. I have known parents who have done this. especially dads who had dreams of their sons being sports stars,I cringe at the damage that can be done when this happens.

Individual sports are good, because children can even choose to compete against their own best efforts if they aren't inclined to compete in a team environment. I think this lets kids still be active but removes the stress of letting teammates down if they aren't good at a sport.

If the child had an aptitude, I would encourage him or her to engage in individual sports. If nothing else, it should help maintain good health, although there are plenty of other salutary effects, such as building self-confidence, self esteem, heightening reflexes, etc.

I don't know I think that team sports are better for a child, but if my future kid wanted to play a individual sport I'm all for it.
