I do NOT encourage my kids to play video games. Since they have been around since both of them have been born{they are now 17 and 20} they see them everywhere. both like to play them. we have a few different systems{this is thanks to them always being changed so you almost have to if you want to get the most recent games} they buy them with money they have earned.or with Christmas or birthdays. I could never to afford the costs. I rarely play them. I guess since i did not grow up with them, i do not care about them. update: my kids are now young adults still love their video games. they have never been my cup of tea. those game systems there are on to Wii and nintendo three but they bought them with their own money. each keep out of trouble, so guess if this is their pleasure shrug.

I don't know that much encouragement is necessary. Too many parent's use this as a child-minding device, and ignore the stagnating effects of their child obsessing on a game for hours at a time. While I do not believe video games are inherently evil, I do believe, from the experiences I have with my own kids and their friends, that they can be highly addictive and prevent or diminish social development.

Absolutely no encouragement needed, in fact you should lock the game controls in a cabinet and tell them to go outside.

Some video games are excellent learning tools (Age of Empire, Civilization series, simulation games). They are based on actual historical facts and figures and explore geographical territories and encounter historical enemies. I myself learn a thing or two from them. But then, there are those hypnotic games of shooting and destroying that are dumbing our children down. Again, it a matter of how much parents get involved with choosing the games and even play with their kids.

Personally, I don't like my kids playing all day on the video games. It's starts off ok, if you can manage the time on. But it seems to get harder and harder to get them to realize that they shouldn't spend that much time sitting in front of the television. At least now they are getting a little bit more excercise with our Wii System. I feel a bit better about that. Here's a wii system review website, if you want to get your kids up off the couch and get some blood circulating.

It isn't something that I would encourage, but it is something that I wouldn't enforce ie tell them they can't play video games. I am only against violent or hateful video games.

A harmless activity (of course, I don't speak of M-rated trash) that can improve hand-eye coordination and doesn't break any laws! Plus, you can join in with your children and play along! Nintendo and Sega games recommended, of course!

I think that my attitude towards video games is more one of toleration than of encouragement. There are so many games out there it is difficult to generalize, but most of the games I have seen don't have very much educational value. HardCor's point is well taken - sometimes you just need entertainment and escapism, so in that context, a reasonable amount of video games might be OK. However, overall, I don't think that they are very worthwhile.

While some video games are mindless and should be pretty much avoided, although; Who doesn't enjoy a good mindless game once in a while? Some games will greatly improve hand eye co-ordination and other will help in problem solving issues. These days there are tons of creative and educational games that are still somewhat fun. Not to meantion there is a wide assortment of simulation games, which seem to be quite popular. You can run your own variety of businesses, from lemonade tycoon to managing your own simulated humans. Expand your minds away from mindless games, tho they do have their place, the mind needs to rest and play as well as learn. Try to limit yourself to small chunks of time 30 - 60 minutes max. If you plan to play longer take a 15 minute break and walk around get a drink or stretch a bit, your body and your concentration will thank you. Have fun gaming!

I probably wouldn't encourage it but allow it. If my future kids did want to play video games I would probably push them slightly towards playing strategic games than mindless reaction games.

Allow? Yes. Encourage? Not really. Though it's not bad once in a while to indulge in mindless games, it's not something that I would ENCOURAGE (Yes, Tommy, you SHOULD go make your character level up to 100, it's so productive, it's much better than going out and improving yourself in real life!) Let the kid play, but encouragement of it might be a bit much. Perhaps it is ironic that I feel this way, since I would like to venture into computer animation and gaming as a career, but I like PlayStation's commercials which state perfectly: Live in your world. Play in ours.

The best thing to do is to play the video games with your children and teach them how to decipher fantasy from reality. Teach them that even though Mario is cool, Him destroying the enemies is fake and done for the sake of art.
