Playing games with your kids can be a wonderful, communicative experience, and in the case of many card games, teaches logic and reasoning skills without making it seem like hard work.

My parents taught me rummy, hearts, bid whist, and pinocle, as well as the usual assortment of kids games. My father, as he lay dying, taught me poker and blackjack. I've passed the games on to my kids, and in some small way feel like I'm passing a torch.

Card games in itself isn't bad, it is the why behind the what. If you are teaching your children card games to give them something to do or to teach them team work or to bond with their brothers or sisters, then this is good. It is only bad if you are doing it to teach or advocate for gambling.

My (future) child would probably end up losing us the house to a guy named No Knees.

Card games, depending on which you are playing, can teach logic, team work, and strategic thinking.

As with many other issues, encouraging (or teaching) your children to play card games depends a lot on the parameters you set, and the attitudes you impart along the way. Playing cards is a pretty socializing pastime, and, while its aim is to win, it doesn't necessarily have to be cutthroat. I think that playing cards fosters a sense of competition, but teaches skills like logic, observation, deduction, and in a game like poker, possibly a bit of acting as well. It sure beats activities like video games which tend to be a lot more impersonal.
