As late as the 1930s, it was believed by a lot of physicians that the colon was an unhealthy organ to remain in the body, and "Take it out! take it all out!" was a common cry of surgeons. This common practice gave rise to the huge laxative market of a hundred years ago. (Add picture)

The colon is absolutely an necessary organ. It helps with nutrition. The colon is getting significantly more publicity with the promotion of colonoscopies for the early detection of colon cancer. Without the colon how would you eliminate what the body doesn't need. For more information about the colon and colitis

This is definitely a bygone practice. The colon is a NECESSARY part of the human gut. It's like removing one's own stomach.

I didn't know they used to do this. What a stupid thing to do, and irreparably harmful as well. Your colon is a pretty vital organ in aid of digestion. They're not tonsils or anything. I just wonder which of our medical practices future generations will scoff at. Colostomy is only used nowadays with people who have severe colitis or something, not just anyone who wishes to be healthier.

Incredible that people voluntarily submitted to this horror. If they survived the operation--by no means certain, a hundred or hundred fifty years ago--they were condemned to a lifetime of discomfort, all for a benefit which was entirely imaginary.
