One of the giants of English literature, Joyce is not the most accessible writer. I would recommend starting with his short fiction Dubliners or his early novel Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man before trying to tackle the genius of Ulysses or the even more daunting Finnegan's Wake. While he is not an easy read, Joyce rewards the careful reader with a use of language that flows like the Shannon.

He is a great writer althought he is a little confusable. Be patient and read his novel to the end - you will be smarter

One of the most brilliant writers who ever lived. Reading his novels can be rough going, especially if you were reared on a diet of television and pop culture, as must be the case for the mongoloid who rated him terrible without leaving a comment. Very few writers were as attentive to the sound of the language and nuance of multiple suggestions by a single word. In addition to being an engaging storyteller and a supreme stylist of language, Joyce was a master parodist--read the Nausicaa section of Ulysses to see successive parodies of most of the literary styles of English from the last several hundred years.
