Like their main influence the Who, undoubtedly overrated if not unpleasant as the Ramones or Nirvana could be. Their failure in the US to ever get higher than 72 is explicable in terms of the stifling commercial radio of the Carter and early Reagan Presidencies, that in Australia less so.

I think they deserve to be in along with the Clash, Elvis Costello and Pistols as the best of their generation, but I suspect that their lack of commercial success in America is a hinderence.

Despite failing to make it in the US, this was *the* British band to emerge from the punk scene of '77. They were dissidents, but Weller also knew and worked within the traditions of the Kinks and the Small Faces and other artists both British and American. The faiilure of the US to fully recognize Weller's genius and the Jam's quality could be redeemed by their being placed (and Weller, as well) in the Hall of Fame.

One of my favorite bands, but a bit too much like The Clash to warrant inclusion.

Never heard of the jam. Like it on toast though.

Unjustly snubbed by Stupid Ameericans who were listening to Styx and Loverboy. A tragically overlooked band that belongs in the Hall!

The Jam were a group at their peak were the biggest band in the UK. 4 number ones and three of them went straight in to the number one slot on the week of release. They were a group of fine musicians lead by song writer Paul Weller. Weller's songs were diverse from hard hitting rock tunes, ballads, funk and soul. His lyrics were very personal painting bleak pictures of English suburban life to heart-felt ballads. This band were fantastic playing live playing to sell out stadiums across Europe.

a great british rock band in the late 70's early 80's combining the influence of the Beatles and Punk. Paul Weller is probably one of the most talented British rockers out there. but HOF status. The Jam just didnt have the legs or worldwide popularity for that sort of distinction. too bad Weller can't go in alone for his combined efforts w/the Jam, the Style Council and his own work.
