You do this because the other side is doing it, and your boy may not have been as open to his campaign as he should have been.

Better to know and have a defense prepared than to get blind-sided. Besides that, it gives your candidate some practice in dealing with prying eyes.

Obama's campaign this year shows some weakness in this area.

This is an interesting rule because if you know yourself and your own weaknesses, then you will be better prepared for your opponent's attacks and will have a full defence.

The first thing you'll find out when you begin working in a campaign is the fact that events move very quickly. A lot of political candidates are damaged by the surprise attack. You don't want to get caught with your pants down in these cases, because many times these situations will take on a life of their own if you're not ready with a counter-attack. Researching your bosses past is good way at pre-empting this.
