This is just a matter of common sense. Practise makes perfect and if you practise a debate before interviews, your candidate will sound a lot more professional and will have a far better chance of being impressive, rather then them being unprepared.

Any campaign that has any sense at all does this. Put the candidate in a room with the campaign researchers and let them go after him like rabid pitbulls. In all likelihood it will be worse than the real thing, and will prevent the deer in the headlights look when the real show happens.

Being prepared for battle is most of the fight. A mangled answer to a surprise question by the press always leads to negative publicity.
