Experienced candidates know this and can often extricate themselves, but sometimes a firm touch on the elbow, with the words "We're late for ______, sir," is necessary.
And if you have to step on a reporters toes, or pull the plug on a camera, so be it. That's a last resort though.

 | Gentle Jude (23) 09/19/2005 | This is a good idea if the candidate wants to survive! They remain dignified whilst avoiding making enemies or saying the wrong thing. Plus it gives the candidate time to recuperate.
