I did this twice in my career, and both times resigned the job.

And both times it not only didn't hurt me, it helped my career quite a bit.

There's a network in this kind of job.

And there's a code to live by.

And you damn sure better live by it, or you can find a new way to make a living.

It isn't very fair but it is something that they have to be warned about and prepared for. This is where that thick skin comes in. I'm sure that your candidate will like this fact (you have to take public blame, that will be an escape root for them!) But it can help you because those are the sorts of things that can thicken some people's skin.
