He saw his opportunities and the took them (by force, naturally.) He had to off the previous king, but what the hey? It is the English royal way! Good play by Shakespeare, by the way.

The guy was a hard-luck case, as everything that could happen during his reign seemed to have found a way to do so. But all-in-all, he kept the country together and oversaw much of the transformation from a grain to wool-trading economy.
