 | GenghisTheHun (177) 03/01/2007 | Eddie probably would have been o.k. He had the requisite number of vices and was a good old boy. Some of his mistresses weren't bad looking either including Lily Langtry. To bad Queen Vickie held on so long. I think he would have made a satisfactory king and maybe stopped the First World War.

 | delco3 (0) 11/29/2006 | Agree that he might have averted the war. Edward was an able leader who excelled in foreign affairs. (He had a number of his own affairs, which his long-suffering and beautiful wife Queen Alexandra turned a blind eye to...another matter.) I think he had to wait too long and when he ascended the throne was over the hill, lasting another nine years.

 | mebchicago (0) 04/05/2005 | Did not become king until of retirement age. Genial and avuncular, he tried his best to keep Europe at peace -- and, had he still been alive in 1914, things might have been very different.

 | irishgit (151) 04/01/2005 | A wenching voluptuary in his youth, which led his mother (Victoria) to state that she planned to outlive him so he would never sit on the throne. As king he proved far better than expected and attempted to add a diplomatic aspect to his role, which was not unsuccessful.

 | Redoedo (41) 02/22/2004 | Despite his relatively short reign, Edward VII was highly effective as King. His extensive foreign travels solidified his reputation as a goodwill ambassador, and his diplomatic initiatives would eventually forge alliances with both France and Russia. Numerous pieces of social legislation were embraced by Edward, including subsidized secondary education, child labor laws, worker protection laws, old age pensions and national health services. His activism in enhancing social justice and equality endeared him to the British public, who deeply mourned his death. Overall, Edward VII was a highly effective monarch who enhanced basic human services to the common Englishman.
