Today is January 30, and on this date in history, in 1649 (1648 Old Style), Charles I, King of England, Scotland and Ireland, was excuted by beheading.

He was a man who had outlived his time. He had many good qualities. He was definitely brave and the way he met the executioner did much to ensure that the monarchy would come back after Cromwell and his ilk lost power or passed from the scene.

King Charles 1st was a holy maytr of the true faith who chose a mayters crown and stood fast for the holy church. He was truly a Defender of the Faith. Images of this most sacred King-Maytry are displayed and processed through Anglican Churches throughout the world on the his feast day.

Any leader that creates a vacuum of power such as Charles I did practically guarantees that political turmoil will eventually ensue, as a result of his failure, the kingdom of England became divided...a reflection of such an impotent ruler he.

Charles I was notoriously stubborn and strong-willed, much like his father. Ascending to the throne following the death of his father, Charles I was intent to continue and carry out his father's policies. The continuation of those policies largely led to a showdown between Charles and Parliament, which would ultimately lead to civil war when Charles attempted to declare his authority absolute over that of Parliament. Overall, Charles' accomplishments as King are near non-existant, and his continuation of his father's foolish policies destroyed political stability in England and divided the kingdom.
