He had his good side but lost big because he was pig-headed. He has been vilified in history for what he lost, but really, he was a good hearted man who was plagued by a brood of ungrateful and horrible children.

His medical problems were hardly his fault. During his reign, despite the loss of the American colonies, Britain greatly increased in wealth and power, and led the world in technological development. He also helped Britain along on the path to constitutional democracy. Like Rodney Dangerfield, gets no respect. A humane ruler.

It is less-informed Americans such as Mr. Reilly who are responsible for the stereotype that all Americans are stupid. Most Americans do speak English today, but as you un-inentionally pointed out, are very prone to typos. I'm curious through as to why you gave him 5-stars. Then again, everyone is entitled to their own opinions...in most countries that is. Anyways, George III did rule for an astounding 6 decades, and like today's prime minister, had some great difficulty in foreign affairs. Although history seems to remember him for more of a madman than a king.

George III ruled for 60 years, and over that time, Britain suffered several losses, but also made significant gains. Although somewhat insane, George III was an effective leader and he knew how to manage English affairs. It was foreign affairs that proved to be most difficult for George. The Treaty of Paris, signed in 1763, negotiated a rocky peace with France. However, both countries were still at each other's throats for control of North America. Nevertheless, under George III, Great Britain emerged as a great colonial power. George III was largely responsible for the anti-British sentiments flowing through the American colonies, and largely due to his hard-headed policies towards them, the colonies rebelled in 1776. The American Revolution lasted for seven years, with thousands of lives lost on both sides. George agreed to the terms and conditions of the Treaty of Paris which recognized American independence. However, it was clear that the loss of the American colonies was a terrible blow to Britain's status as a dominant world power. Public faith in George's ability plummeted following the British loss, leading to a significant weakening of the monarchy. In the later years of George's reign, Britain overextended their military might, taking on both France and the United States in the early 19th century. Peace was soon negotiated with the United States, and Napolean's defeat led to improved relations between Britain and France. Despite major setbacks, George understood the dynamics of British politics and was largely responsible for historic economic growth throughout his reign. Also during George's term, the slave trade was abolished and Ireland came under the control of Great Britain. Overall, George III was highly influential, but ineffective in the administration of foreign affairs. However, under George, Great Britain saw expanded opportunity and prosperity, and despite major losses to their empire, remained one of the strongest powers in the world, although not nearly as strong as before George ascended to the throne. Unfortunately, the economic prosperity that George created would slowly erode following George's death.
