How in the world can you rate a second rate Eddie Sutton and Coach k ahead of Rupp and Iba. I would rate Rupp 1 Iba 2 and Wooden 3.

Look at all these haters. Envy fuels your ignorance. Kentucky is the best and has been for many many years.

99.9% OF THE NEGATIVE WORDS ABOUT ADOLPH RUPP ARE FROM #1: PEOPLE THAT NEVER MET THE MAN! #2: PEOPLE READING WORDS, WRITTEN BY A REPORTER THAT NEVER MET THE MAN! RUPP GETS THE RACIST TAG--YET HIS TEAMS WERE THE FIRST MAJOR, OUT OF THE SOUTH TO CONTEST MIXED RACE TEAMS!, THE FIRST TEAM TO SCHEDULE TEAMS WITH BLACKS INTO SOUTHERN ARENAS FOR INTER-RACIAL GAMES! RUPP CHOSE AND COACHED BLACKS ON HIS HIGHSCHOOL TEAMS! AND ACCORDING TO THE BLACK HIGHSCHOOL COACHES IN KENTUCKY HELPED MANY OF THIER KIDS GET COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS! THE PICTURE WAS THUS: RUPP/KENTUCKY SIGN BLACK PLAYERS--NO S.E.C. TEAM WOULD PLAY AGAINST INTIGRATED TEAMS--SO U.K. GOES 0fer THE SEC. RUPP AND U.K. DO NOT SIGN BLACKS, AND ARE DRAWN,AND QUARTERED BY THE REST OF THE NATION! AAAAAH! THE GOOD OLD AMERICAN WAY! JACK

Rupp brought the fast break game to college basketball. I believe he is the only coach to win the NCAA in three different decades.
ConvenienceGuy 06/26/2007
I'm not going to say this guy is a racist, but he is no saint. It takes egomania and selfishness to handle a college basketball match-up the way he did, and I am unwilling to let him prove himself with a reading of that tenuous biography.
Ross2020 05/22/2006
Cheater who got KU rolling on its cheating ways. Yeah he won a lot of games, but come on...at what cost? Where is the integrity? Points-shaving, "covert subsidization of players," "cribbing on exams", "illegal recruiting."

All of you that are calling Coach Rupp a racist have proably never watched the man coach a basketball game. the only thing you know is that you watched a movie or heard from someone that he was a racist. When the truth is you have no idea about the man or what his views were.Hollywood always takes liberties with the lives they portray and you people just take it for the truth, well its time that you people that didnt know the man and have no basis for an opinion just shut your biased mouths and accept that the man no matter his views was one of the greatest college coaches of all time.
twokyfans 12/29/2005
You people don't have a clue, Coach Rupp played black player befor he ever came to Kentucky, his high school teams all had black players on them. In 1950 he help a great black player to get a scholarship to Duquesne University his name was Jim Tucker and went on to become a great All-American, Rupp also held coaching clinics for black coaches going back to the 60's. People who call this great man a racist know absolutely nothing about the man.
Josser 11/25/2005
Way ahead of his time. If the University would have allowed him to coach as long as he wanted, his record would still be #1

4 national championships, an olympic gold medal, 27 sec championships, 876 wins, and an .823 winning percentage speaks for itself. as for being a racist, of his 2 personal choices for the olympic team in the 1940s that won the gold one was black. he wanted blacks on his team, they wouldnt come because uk played in the racist south. theres no reason to criticize his career so quit using the nonexistant rascism to bring him down. hollywood pissed off the entire rupp family this past month for their depiction of rupp in the upcoming movie about texas westerns 1966 season. rupp's son walked out during the screening.

Adolf Rupp was very business-like in his aproach to basketball. He looked for every angle, every opportunity to advance his cause, and was extremely limited in his focus. Rupp used these personal qualities to rule college basketball for 41 seasons. Better known Nazi's used these same methods in an attempt to rule the world. As NAZI's go, Rupp was alright.
JOHN HAYEN 06/27/2005
As innovaive and excellant with the x's and o's he was completely behind the times with society and culture. Easliy one of the best coaches if no the best in his era. However he couldn't coach in todays game. Not because of game knowledge but people knowledge.
steviep617 05/07/2005
horrible racist
sammycat 05/01/2005
Look at the numbers...period. We are rating on great coaches and clearly he is one of the best. He was a product of his times, we must remember that. But with that we also must not take away his accomplishments. He was one of the top two---ever.

Easily the greatest of all time.

Rupp laid the foundation of the Greatest College Basketball Program in history. Even Street & Smith agree with me on this, he is the greatest coach of all time.
Jorg Potts 02/05/2005
Adolf Rupp was one of if not the greatest college basketball coaches of all time. Had he recruited blacks any earlier in his career; Where could the have played in the south?
BlueNation 10/20/2004
Adolph Rupp perfected what Naismith created. He and Naismith knew each other. The Baron Propelled college basketball further and faster than anyone could, paving the road and making it easy for coaches like Dean Smith and John Wooden. He was the first coach to implement an unrelenting fast break. And it is true, he took country boys from the hills and made them better than anyone.
madskilz 09/13/2004
much better coach than pitino
WKUMark 08/11/2004
Rupp ran a very dirty program and won by breaking the rules.
callitdownthel ine75 07/24/2004
Before the great John Wooden, Adolph Rupp was who all college basktball coaches were measured against. A basketball fundamentalist wonk, Rupp demanded the best from his players. And his players would respond with four national titles. A man from the south, he was a product of the pre-Civil Rights movement. But even Rupp would come to terms and embrace the necessary integration of schools and sport (albeit not for a long time). Given all this, he unquestionably stands amongst the greatest coaches in college basketball history.
makem 07/08/2004
Nicknamed the Baron of Bluegrass because he took more than 80% of his players from the hills of Kentucky and turned them into champions. He is the second alltime winningest coach with 876 wins. Dean Smith stayed at North Carolina until he beat Rupp's record by 3 games (879 wins, however Dean Smith lost 254 games and Rupp lost only 190. Rupp is also second in winning percentage at 82.3%. He won four NCAA championships (and an NIT when that was still the big tournament), and 27 SEC titles.
Ninobene 04/01/2004
A very good coach, whether I agree with his social views or not.
Rick175 03/30/2004
Rupp was a racist.
