Coached 1000 games. At three schools-at the same time. More or less started the NCAA and Olympic basketball. He might not have invented the game but he played for the guy who did and he made it what it is today.

I'm an MU fan and I hate Kansas but there is no denying the historical importance of Phog Allen. Rupp and Smith learned from him and they are One and Two on the All-Time wins list. Only one NCAA title but two other titles pre-NCAA times. Not too bad.

1 national championship may not be enough to qualify as a great coach but Allen won 3. 2 of them were Helm's National Championships because they came before the NCAA tournament went into effect. Not only was he a student of Naismith, but also a teacher to Rupp and Smith.
