One of the better Baseball movies made. This movie was a great tribute to Maris ( and Mantle) and it really captured the pressure and stress that comes with being a Sports star. That all this took place before the magestardom that Baseball players feature now was an even better touch. You could really see that although these guys were playing a glamorous Sports, they were still regular guys dealing with demanding fans and an unrelenting media. Thomas Jane was great as Mickey Mantle and Barry Pepper nailed the Roger Maris role. It was also great to see 1960's Baseball and NYC shown on the screen. In the end a wonderful movie.

One of my favorite movies, if not my favorite, it really shows the heartlessness of the fans and the cruelty that is part of any sport. Poignant to me was the comparison of McGuire's chase (while on a non-contending team with a losing record!) and the pure adulation he experienced vs. the nasty, ugly ordeal Maris went through as he got close to the record and the absolute indignity of the asterisk. I think the asterisk will get much more use in the coming months and years, though.

One of the best made for cable movies I've ever seen, sports related or not.

I knew Yankee Fans were brutal to players on other MLB teams, but I never knew that brutality was ever placed on a ball player of their own. I know the importance of Babe Ruth, and I know Marris is no Babe Ruth, but I can't believe what this guy had to go through to achieve such a memoriable thing. I don't think there will ever be another ball player like the Babe, and I can't believe such a great player will ever be hated so much by his own fans. I think the movie was a thing of beauty, and it truly is a must see watch any baseball fan.

There's nothing subtle about this chronicle of Roger Maris' record-setting 1961 season, but it's worth watching the young Maris cope with the pressure of being pitted by the media against teammate and mentor Mickey Mantle while, instead of embracing the taciturn slugger, Yankees fans become more hostile the closer Maris comes to the single-season home run record of 60, held by the legendary Babe Ruth.
