Using the doppler effect, the beams from the radar scan the air, picking up precipitation of all kinds. Doppler Radar, from NEXRAD to local, is invaluable in the tracking of severe and winter storms. Many a lives have been saved thanks to the technology, especially the precise local radars with street-level mapping. In addition, Doppler Radars can track rotation using Radial Velocity technology, which measures which winds are moving towards and away the radar. Also, there is VIL (Vertical Integrated Liquid) mode, which can measure the size of hailstones from the most severe of thunderstorms. Even more, doppler can estimate rain totals, thus saving lives threatened by floods before they happen! Doppler rocks!
