A nice piece of Papal sponsored savagry, primarily designed to loot the Albigensian treasuries and land holdings.

Religious differences were, as they often are, a convenient excuse.

Cheerled by Pope Innocent III, a rabble of rapacious crusaders under Simon de Montfort moved through southern France (Languedoc, the area around Toulouse), exterminating entire populations of heretics, effectively ending a vigorous civilization which easily could have provided Europe a Renaissance two hundred years earlier than it actually occurred.
