In Ireland, religion and politics are closely linked, and have been for hundreds of years. Particularly in the north, neighbourhoods tend to be uniformly Catholic or Protestant, fostering and enhancing the clannishness that is always present in Irish society. This is more complex, far more complex than simple religious differences, although they are a significant factor. The bully-boys on either side, be they Provos or UDF, seldom need much excuse to turn to violence, and religion will do as well as anything.

Firstly, its UDA, and secondly, the conflict is not about religion, as the IRA and its various factions and related repulbican groups are all avowedly anti-sectarian and in fact have had many Protestants in their ranks down the years.
