More of a nationalist/tribal struggle than a religious one. The Hindus are Tamils from the Indian mainland, while the Buddhists are native to Sri Lanka. Religion is often blamed for wars it has little to do with. Take away religious differences, and the tribal/linguistic/political/economic sources of conflict would still exist. Without the promise of reincarnation, the suicide bombers might be less enthusiastic-but even that is doubtful.
