They are O.K. if everything you buy is on-sale. They were much better a few decades ago before the leveraged buyout that busted the unions. There were people there that worked most of their lives at Safeway and made good money until the buy-out.

As a former employee of the Sacramento (Arden Way) bakery (2007-2008) I would urge you never to purchase anything from here. The sanitation practices are horrible at best. Im talking mold in many of the bread machines, product that sits out for days before it is packaged as fresh. Many of the things that are used by the cake decorators sit in the fridge and mold excessively.

If there is ever a question of my sincerity, all you need to do is look in the bakery at about 8:00 and look at all the racks with product on it covered in plastic. Your fresh made cookies, breads, and pastries are often times a day or so old before they are even packaged.

The fresh muffin case is a joke. If you think those are fresh daily you are sadly mistaken. I was a witness on several occasions to bakers who were sick working with no gloves, blowing their nose on the floor, no hair nets, not washing their hands, nor using any sort of clean baking pans (how good do you think cookies taste on a pan used the day before for jalapeno bread?).

Safeway is WAY more expensive than Giant!!! I usually buy "the laughing cow" for my toddler and it is $3 @ Giant. Safeway's Price? "on sale" for $4.79!!!!! And the list goes on and on... I only go there when it's an emergency and i have no choice otherwise it's Giant or Wholefood (but talk about overpriced...)

I won't be shopping at Safeway any more. I was using their home delivery program because of the convenience it offered. My time is valuable and this would be one less thing for me to worry about. My last two orders have been short items that I was charged for. I was able to get credit for the items, but only after spending way too much time on the phone. This last delivery request was the topper. I scheduled delivery for between 7pm and 9pm. The delivery driver called me a 8:45pm and said he wouldn't be able to make my delivery until between 10:30pm and 11pm. Needless to say I canceled the order and will now be doing my shopping elsewhere.

I'm just tired of making sure they are respecting the "buy one get one free" offer. They totally charge you the "free" one, this is the third time !!! I am already an exhausted mother of three to return and tell them.
Maybe the cashier is trying to be polite talking to you during the whole transaction, I cannot concentrated while they are marking the items. Drives me crazy !!! Here in San Mateo CA it's already expensive to deal with these "details" . No more !

All I want is what I want, when I want it and at a reasonable price.

I don't want a hyper-engineered shopping experience inclusive of psychologically taylored, manipulative music and sappy goodie two shoes comentators. I don't want coupons. I don't want club cards -especially when the store is the Only one in town. I don't want employees who are forced to harass customers by repeatedly asking them to participate in the club card program. I don't want employees offering to assist customers with carrying out their purchases when the customer was able to hand carry those purchases to the check-out stand. I don't want a store floor plan designed to inconvenience shoppers. I don't want employees soliciting donations for Any cause.

I want employees who are Allowed to use common sense and who are Allowed to be respectful of customers. These employees are my neighbors. The management's mandated employee/customer interaction protocol alienates the two groups and creates animosity between them.

CEO Steve Burd says, "We're all about metrics." I say that you're all about to lose what customers you have.

What about this club card program? I'll tell you that I intentionally avoid items that are offered at a discount to club card members.

I'm tired of having to prepare myself to be disrespected every time I shop at these stores. Soon I will no longer have to. I will shop elsewhere eventhough it takes longer to get to another store -eventhough the other store may be more expensive, and eventhough getting to that store requires more fuel. Sopping at these stores is one of the most degrading experiences I know of.

I am disgusted with Safeway! Free with every Safeway brand coffee filter purchase: MAGGOTS!!!! A month ago my kitchen was raided with hundreds of maggots. It took us two days to figure out that they had come from Safeway coffee filters. I would have chucked it up to bad luck if it had not happened to me TWICE! The second time I caught the larva in the box before they were able to breed. It took another two days to find all the little suckers and bleach em out of my kitchen!
On top of that, every other time I get bread from safeway, it is already moldy.
I am sick of returning food and hearing lame excuses as to why there are bugs or mold in my product.
I will never shop at another Safeway in my life!

Rancher Reserve is not what Safeway says it is. I cook my meat med-rare and it's tough to eat. Safesay says it's Angus meat and I don't question it. But it probably select cut not the choice cut that they used to do. That's why they change the name to Rancher Reserve, to fool the public.

I have found another store that sell certified angus beef or natural certified angus beef which is much more tender than Safeways. Will not buy their meats again.

I've never been a big fan of Safeway, but I am going to give them 3 stars because they revamped the local market near where I work. It is in SE DC, which is an area that is often forgotten by companies because of its tradtionally lower class, black population. However, they have done a great job at that location by adding a Starbucks, sandwhich station, and an overall overhaul of their store. It is cleaner, nicer looking, and more pleasant to shop than what it was several years ago. If they continue with this trend in other stores, I am sure Safeway will improve its overall reputation.

I shop here, mostly because its the most convenient major grocery. If you watch the flyers and the loss-leaders, their prices are comparable to the other mega-chains, at least in my region.

safeway sucks....they are such a freakin' rip-off, even with their shiny red card. That shiny red "saver" card is a red badge of shame.

I have been working for this company for about four years. It actually use to be a good company but they are becoming like everybody else. They use to pay there employees good and have great benefits. No more!! Oh and safeway has this thing where they want their employees to have world class customer service. But they over work there employees because they don't have enough employees to run the store because corporate is trying to save money by taking hours. Then they wonder why customer service is bad! Duh because there working the employees to the bone. Plus corporate whites shirts of this company are a buch of jerks. They show up in a safeway store every once in a while not to motivate the worker but to chew there butts out. This company has lost my respect.

The only experience that I had with Safeway was in the middle of Washington D.C., so this rating may not be descriptive of Safeway in general. The one that I went to was ridiculously small, with very little selection. It was dirty and overcrowded, and the prices were ridiculously high. The checkout line extended halfway to the back of the store. Even though this store was within walking distance of my apartment, I never went back and chose to do my shopping at a Harris Teeter that took me half an hour to get to on the Metro.

Safeway is a just a plain old back-to-basics grocery store the way it should be. They buy in bulk and you can find some great deals on products you've heard of. You'll find none of that over-priced organic stuff at Safeway.

Safeway has higher prices than Giant or Food Lion, but I drive out of my way to shop there. Their selection is better, their produce is of higher quality, and their meat is great. Food Lion is less than 1 mile from my house. Safeway is about 10 miles from my house. It is that much better. I believe they have "secret shoppers," which would explain why they are always saying "hi." One thing they do that I don't like is thank you Mrs..... and use your last name when you check out. Most of the employees are friendly and willing to help. If there is a long line, all you have to do is ask a manager to have another register opened and they usually do. Even though generally their prices are higher, when they have things on sale, the prices are even better than Wal Mart. As long as they keep up the great customer service and keep the quality of their goods high, I will gladly pay a little more and go out of my way to shop there instead of any other grocery store.

Safeway is all about service not value, and low prices.Example:Oregon buy one get one free items, you choose one item only, you get it for half the cost, but not in California, you pay full price .So think of all the people that only get one item,Bingo;Safeway makes lots of money.Grocery outlets cater to different kinds of people, this indicates where they decide to build.Safeway likes middle class and elderly, service ,service ,service'

We don't shop regularly at Safeway - there is one just a few blocks from our house, and we mostly go there when we need just a few items, or when we want to rent a movie. The prices are just too expensive, and they don't have as much selection as other grocery stores we go to.

I too agree with the others on this site. Safeway have very fresh food and friendly employees, But their prices are just too high. You can catch a few things on sale but that's it. I like low prices better than nice employees.

On some stores I've been to, they are organized and easily accessible, but why I say it is just good is because of the occasional unfriendly service, the prices and the card I have to use to get savings. The good flip side is that its subsidary, Pak 'n Save gives better prices and you can use your card there.

It's difficult to believe that so many people believe that they are saving money just because your savings are printed on your receipt. Here's a secret: you are saving money off their marked-up prices. There are so many better grocery stores in my area that is impossible to settle for the overwhelming mediocrity at Safeway.

Safeway is just a perfect store all around. I used to love it when I lived back West. There are no Safeways in Florida, which kinda sucks, but we have our share of good stores here. I highly recommend Safeway too everyone. :)

Here in Arizona, most Safeways in the Phoenix area are dark, somewhat dirty in apperance, and allways smell like old meat. I must say that the employees are mostly helpfull, and prices, well they allways have a deal on everday items.

Good deals if you use your card with personal info on it. That's tacky, and so is this supermarket. No bakery or deli to speak of, smelly, no public bathrooms. Give me a Publix and I'd never see the inside of a Safeway again.

I appreciate the friendliness of the store employees and that Safeway card is great. I'd rather have a card like Safeway's than to hassle with a bunch of coupons. Also useful is their frequent feature of buy one, get another free.

Safeway is a pretty nice grocery store. I like it because it seems to be one of the cleanest grocery stores out there, and the aisles are much wider than those at other stores, making the shopping experience much more pleasant. The Safeway Club card is really convenient to use and provides significant savings. I've always received excellent service at my local Safeway, and it seems to be managed very well. On the down side, the selection is not as wide as it is at other grocery stores, and you have to unpack your own cart and load your groceries onto the belt yourself (I'm whining, I know). For everyday-type grocery shopping, Safeway is a good bet.

Safeway is consistently a good grocery store - much better than the other big chains. I generally hate it when you have to get a membership card of any kind to participate in discounts, but since Safeway's card takes the place of the even-more-annoying coupons, I was happy to join. Now I just give the card to the checkout person, and I end up saving something like $5-10 on an average grocery store trip. Not bad. And Safeway always seems to have the stuff I'm looking for, while places like Cala Foods (here in California) or Winn-Dixie always seem to be missing things.
