I recently got to see this in a theatre with a live orchestra. The print of the film must have been restored because the picture quality was great. It is a real treat. Chaney is one of the greatest stars of the silent era. This movie is very eerie and entertaining.

Well-done for not having any sound. Lon Chaney's good- the scene you might recognize from this one is when Christine (Mary Philbin) unmasks the phantom when he's playing the organ, and he gets up and towers over her and the picture gets all fuzzy. Every version of Phantom seems to be different- sometimes his name is Erik, sometimes he's just The Phantom, and the last scene in this movie is different from every other rendition I've seen or heard.

This is the horror film that started it all for Universal! Inspired heavily by the German horror films that preceeded it, The Phantom of the Opera is a great example of how silent horror movies are the best! All you need is Lon Chaney, one of the greatest actors of all time, his trusty mak-up kit and some excellent sets and camera work, and you got yourself one helluva horror picture! Chaney steals the show while his supporting cast is honorable as well. One of my favorites of the horror genre!
